New Volt

Good bye

My brother in law's new Volt should arrive by the end of the month. I will try to keep everyone up to date when I hear news. The GM dealer people are installing a charging station in his garage. He is not a car guy but is excited about the technology. It will be interesting to see if the Volt gets gas mileage as good as my 91 Metro.

This would be interesting if we can follow a real world user around for a while :thumb I wonder how much the charging station is setting him back? Kinda reminds me of the EV1, where they made you put one in before even leasing you the car to the tune of several thousand dollars.

Do you know if his charging station is metered separately?

It will be interesting to see how many pennies per mile it takes!

For $41,000, who cares?

Mileage will depend 100% on how he drives it. If he drives 300 miles a day, he's going to get 40 mpg. If he drives 30 miles a day, he'll get infinite mpg.

So the real question is cents/mile. A Metro getting 50MPG with $3/gal gas gets 6 cents/mile.

An interesting article:

Inside Line: our Chevy Volt's battery miles cost more than the gas ones

Right. They say in the article grid prices vary widely--so you really need to look at your's before making assumptions.

I think this sums it up pretty well.

As Woodie points out, mpg is meaningless without knowing the mix. These articles are only going to confuse people.

Like saying the Nissan Leaf gets infinite MPG. Duh.

But what is the cost per mile?

Its interesting because volume production could drop that price significantly.

Personally, however, I think hybrids are stupid. Unnecessarily complicated--too many systems to fail, etc. Not having plug-in hybrids until now is also stupid.

Pure electrics are more interesting. The UK has been doing them for years. Their approach to dead batteries was "ok, we'll throw a small generator in the back for emergency charging". Problem solved.
