what glitches? before comcast gutted the analog spectrum and forced everyone to buy boxes or do without (take a guess which option I picked?) I ran a 1.7 celery system XPSP2 with 4 TV tuners it was also my conversion station torrent station MEDIA server for 4 televisions (hauppauge box at 4 other TV's that could command a stream of anything I had on the server machine) my radio with DVR (old FM card) my FTP station , My podcast download station etc.. etc.. etc.. this is not a one shot pony machine that did nothing. I worked that CPU HARD and DAILY. I also used it for net access when I did not feel like booting up the big machine and it was my mail server as well for the household. I don't think I EVER ONCE had to "reboot" the machine except when an update or program requested it or I had to upgrade or replace a piece of hardware (tuner card or hard disk or ram etc..) One time I had over 6 months "uptime" no reboots the only reason I had to reboot was the PSU fan failed so I had to shut it down to replace the unit. no glitches no bugs no crashes no instability no viruses nothing. the machine I am on now?. no crashes no glitches no bugs. the last time I installed windows was what 3 to 3.5 years ago when I built the machine. windows xp is 100% as stable and clean as a mac. at least in this household. Not saying its better than mac. But I am saying that neither is mac better than windows. |

you want to come visit so I can show you the machine? I still have it. Only reason its not used anymore is comcast gutted the analog spectrum making all my tuners obsolete. Sage TV was wonderful wonderful software. I custom built that machine. recording 4 programs at once it consumed 74 watts of power. it was my baby. does windows tell you anywhere when it was installed? I can show you if you don't believe me (if it records that) the only time I can recall in the last 6+ years even so much as having the "dreaded" blue screen of death (hard windows crash) was only because of a bad ram module. or does the propaganda engine you hear say they crash daily and we reinstall monthly? |

Why are you blaming Comcast for something that Congress did? |

because comcast did not switch to DIGITAL. comcast switch to proprietary ENCRYPTED digital forcing the requirement of "Boxes" if they had simply "gone digital" I could have simply swapped out my Analog cards for Digital Cards. no big deal. so I blame comcast for that. I also blame congress for this entire stinking digital mess. Digital sucks. you can't even use it while mobile. ANY MOTION AT ALL and its gone. Poof. no signal. so NO digital in the car/van NO digital in the RV in motion and NO digital on the boat. even the rocking back and forth of a boat is enough to "splat" the reception. Where is the digital audio units? (useless since it won't work while moving) where is the Digital VCR's ? Digital DVR's ? Digital DVD-R's ? Portables? (at least THEY are finally coming out) the whole digital switch is a mess a debacle and worthless. the SOUL purpose was the $20 billion they scored selling the bandwidth. that is the ONLY reason they forced this PITA switch. |

Correct, nerys, but even worse: Comcast LIED! For over a year they were airing their "Don't worry about the digital conversion--we've got you covered--you don't have to change a thing" commercials. What BS. They stripped all analog channels over 30, and left only local broadcast (a requirement of most franchise contracts). They encrypted the extended basic digital channels. Only local broadcast and public access are in ClearQAM (also franchise requirements), as well as a hodgepodge of FM stations, shopping channels, etc. randomly spread from 1-1 to 130-16. And they *gradually* implemented this--stripping and rearranging bits at a time over 9 months without any notice. All to get more revenue selling/renting boxes, and clearing spectrum for an insane number of PPV channels. Not happy. Also, not buying it.

yeah worse here NOTHING is clear qam. I connected a digital tuner to my cable line and did not get one single channel. its BOX or NOTHING around here. I opted for nothing. not only that but I said I will not pay your $15 fee for "not having tv" any longer. they said sorry thats not negotiable. I said Fine now you get $0 I will have a Clear Box in 30 minutes to replace you. it VERY quickly became negotiable so now I pay $38 to comcast after taxes for my internet service. I can live with that. I WAS paying them nearly $80 (extended basic tv) so they lost $42 a month from me for being greedy. I will take my TV my way or NO WAY. not negotiable. sadly enough lemmings and sheep "took" the boxes and are "happy" with that. know how hard it is explaining to someone their VCR or DVDR will no longer be able to "change" channels for scheduled recording that they can only record ONE channel and they have to SET that channel in advance.? Grr Satellite is no better now sadly. now they charge PER BOX and PER DVR. I said I do not want to pay you per box. I want to pay you for your service. thats it. they said we lease the boxes we have to recoup our costs those boxes are expensive. I said I know so how about I BUY the boxes outright. I will have them all by the end of the week. I will procure my own boxes and just by service from you. Do I still have to pay per box? yes was the response. I hate people who lie. I don't care if its a script if you know its a lie DO NOT SAY IT. so I said what happened to the box fee being a lease? I just bought my own box and my own dish and my own wiring so what are you leasing me? Silence. (at least the skxwang was smart enough to SHUT UP at this point :-) but I was not done I forced him says it. So this is not a lease fee its a "because we can" fee with no valid purpose except "because you can" right. He said yes. Got to give him at least a little credit for admitting that. I said ok you have a good day. I will try back in a few months and see if you still have these stupid box fees. (which of course they will) in our household that means service would not be $40 a month as advertised. it would be more like $110 a month. No thanks One of these days I will figure out how to get my hands on the equipment that takes the downlink from the sat system and "shunts" it to a NTSC spectrum over a cable line like they do at our local campground. they I can buy ONE SINGLE box and just use any cable ready tuner for all the TV's in the house. I only need maybe 30 channels and could probable even live with 20. Grrr :-) ok thats my "rant" for today :-) |

Surprised their franchise agreement allows that--you might want to check the tuner again on the cable. And it can be difficult to "lock in" on the channels the first time. Well, at least your internet is relatively cheap--its $58 here, they recently hiked it by $5. Its easy to rant about these yahoo's, huh? |
