Has anybody successfully removed the Factory Pin Stripe without destroying the finish?![]() I've tried a little lacquer thinner. Nothing. A little rubbing compound. Zippo. Would like to take it totally off since most of it's just about totally faded anyway. But I'd like to retain what finish is there. |

If solvents won't budge it, you could use rubbing compound on a buffer. Even that may be slow. Carefully wet sanding it with a high grit paper (2000?) may be faster. Of course you'll need to buff it out afterward with a fine cut compound. Just found this procedure using oven cleaner: http://cleangsx2004.tripod.com/pinstripe.htm Looks promising. |

If it's just vinyl tape just be careful with a razor blade to get under a corner, then just pull. |

I'm assuming it's painted on, especially because of the curve it makes on the door. |

I feel for you. The previous owner of my metro used a razorblade to remove the pinstrips. He cut into the paint and now looks like a wild man with a hatchet tried to club the stripes off. Oh well, I've learned to live with it. Maybe you could try a heat gun.. |

If it is vinyl use a heat a gun. It will come off really easy. Any goo that is left over will come off with alcohol or Goo Gone. If it is paint, good luck with that! |

I bought an eraser that you put on a drill. You can pick them up an auto paint supply store or I actually got mine at Carquest. Works like a champ and cost about $10. Edit- They are called pinstripe eraser pads and are made by Astro. Edited by GA Geo, Nov 24 2010, 11:33 PM.

That's for stick-on pinstripes, just to clarify. |

I don't think they are painted on. The stick on ones fade too. |

One word = WD-40. Stay away from solvents and razors. Also, old scotchtape/stickers on glass that you would be inclined to razorblade off - WD-40 and a paper towel. Lubricating is the last thing it does. WD-40 has a million uses. I use it to clean tracked in tar off the livingroom carpet! |

I'll try the good ol' WD-40. I figured if lacquer thinner didn't do it, why would WD? Stranger things have happened! I'll give it a shot. The EZ Off seems a little sketchy. How does it know to eat the stripe and not the paint? Must be the "Thermos Theory"....................keeps hot things hot, and cold things cold. But how does it know?

We still need to know: is it a sticker or is it painted on? |

It appears to be painted on. Tried WD40, still the same, nothing. It's looking like wet sanding may be the only option.

Ahhh. I was watching to see how it went with you, snowfish. All of my pinstripe is still on, so maybe mine is painted too. I was thinking of having mine repainted so that it all matches. ![]() |
