I usually have good heat in 1.5 to 2 miles. About 30 mph. Smokes me out after 5-7 miles.

yup just confirmed that tonight. FULL operating temps at 1.6 to 1.7 miles I think it did hit at 1.5 but waited to confirm it was solid after turning on the fan (to make sure it did not "dip" back down) so 1.6 to1.7 miles I would guess 3.5 minutes or so?

I started it backed out of my parking spot waited for traffic and accelerated to my cruise of 45-48mph and 1.6 miles later it was full temp.in around 8 minutes I had solid piping heat coming out of the ducts.
so if its anything less (ie more minutes/miles) something is wrong.
Idling took over 20 minutes I was still only half way to full temp and I gave up not wanting to waste anymore gas.

So lately, my Metro has had some bad heat. My car will not stay at operating temp when the heat is on, plus the heat is not very warm. Today, I replaced the thermostat and the coolant. I let the car run until it was up to temp, turned on the heat and drive 1 mile to the gas station, and the temp gauge was at the "C". Also I am getting bad FE, I pulled the plugs and the car is running rich. Correct me if I am wrong, but this could cause the problem correct?
check the thermostat - remove it place it in a pan of hot water it should go from closed to open. if not replace it

Just to add another data point to the mix... It was 23 deg. this morning. It took 4 miles of driving at 35-40 mph to get my engine up to normal operating temperature. This happens to be the distance to the highway I take to work. Blasting along at 60mph doesn't seem to affect coolant temperature, so from what I can tell, wind chill factor doesn't come into play in this situation. Perhaps the thermostat has to close more often at higher speeds though.
I noticed the other day that my truck (with a 4.7L V-8) takes about half as much time too warm up.

To check the thermostat , put it in a pan of water along with a thermometer. That way you
can see at what temp the thermostat opens. Over thermometer might work.

I think that I may have it working. I replaced the thermostat for a second time, I got the Napa Premium stat this time in the 195 degree version. I installed it at school yesterday, let it warm up and all of the way to work I had great heat, the temp stayed at operating temp. I will check it again today to make sure everything is working.

BTW the temp is 6 degrees, so we will see how it warms up.

6 deg F, and it will only get colder. We see lows of -40f, without windchill, and it is not fun.

Napa has one in their premium line. Here is the part number, THM 531090.

So far this has been working out great for me.

I feel your pain my friend.
I used to live in Bremerhaven, Germany.
Similar winter weather.
You had to have a block heater in your car or you might not get to work in the am.
We kept the trucks running all night so the fluids wouldn't freeze.
Yes, that is what I meant.
I saw a quart of 30w oil freeze. The old style, cardboard & tin, can. Froze solid one night after being left out.
Nothing like climbing out of your tent in the am to sub-zero temps and thinking;
"Hmm, I hope it warms up to around -20 today."
I liked it there nonetheless.
The northern lights were fun to watch.
