Home Made Air Dam; Edging to the rescue

I wanted to close the air gap between the bottom of my bumper and the ground. I thought about buying a bumper and hacking it up, then mounting it. I came across a roll of edging for landscaping at big lots for 5 bucks.

Price seemed right and I drilled holes along the bottom edge of my bumper and used zip ties to secure it. I decided on zip ties so if I hit something it could easily rip away. It took maybe 15 minutes and I was done.

Boy it looks nice too. I also ripped a strip for the lower bumper opening and used a piece of card board for a 3/4 radiator block.

Great looking mod, and very cheap in cost of doing. Great thinking!

Bottom out??? Can you use those words in the same sentence when referencing a geo???

I havent bottomed out, yet. I was worried about road kill. It is a soft like plastic. It flexes very easily. I cut it with a box cutter. Like a knife through butter.

Its not too hard to bottom a geo out. I do a lot of dirt/gravel road driving though. Granted it takes one hell of a bump.

Your front bumper is now 4 inches lower than it used to be. so bottoming out might become a problem for ya but it sounds like its flexible enough.

Ahh yess, nothing like going 50 mph down a dirt road to loosen up the shocks.

Forgot His Manpurse

Thanks for the idea!

I am not sure how you hooked it up though? Zip ties? Screws? Is that secure? Do you have a close up picture of where the zip ties went? Thanks!

Cool! Let us know how much of a difference (if any) it makes on your mileage! I'd love to try that...

I like my air dam also, Cobb. :thumb

I was not so sure I would so I got 3' of aluminum bar and fashioned "L" brackets. Didn't want to permanently drill holes in the bumper if I changed my mind. :whistle I have hit a few curbs with it and the brackets slide off the bumper. I think it contributes to my being able to get 55 mpg in the summer with the other mods I have made.

I would love to do that, but the bumper high snow would deform it.

Just zip ties so it can be ripped or torn away.

Awesome idea! I've been trying to come up with ways to extend my front bumper. I think I will do mine with brackets like Bad Bent except I'll pin em with quick release pins cause I have the same snow issues as JM. By the way Bad Bent, is that a roof scoop I see? :rocker
