How to adjust rear brakes and parking?; Got the pads and fluid changed.

I got some gold pads from advance auto and dot 3 fluid and flushed my system and installed the pads. The old pads were each a different thickness, interesting.

It stops better, petal feels firmer, but I can not find the hole to inset the brake spoon in the rear.

How do you adjust the rear and parking brake?

I believe it is accomplished by jacking the johnson rod up and down several times and using the pedal. It is, in theory, supposed to be an automatic process. Little serations on levers in the shoe hardware are supposed to bring them up as you apply braking.

The rear brakes have an automatic pawl with teeth. These get siezed up and lose adjustment. Remove the rear drums with a slide hammer after removing the bearing.

Thanks. How about the parking? I read a post online that I needed to unbolt the seat belts, pull up the carpet and find some turn buckels to take the slack out of it.

If you need to adjust either the parking brake or the rear brakes, something is wrong, most likely the self-adjusters have failed.

Mark, get your happy @ss down here so we can fix your brakes.
Brakes are important. You can't just wait for them to fix themselves.
Bring enough money to buy parts.
If we need new (or gently used ) adjusters, we'll head over to PnP.
Brake shoes will cost around $20 and drums are around $30 each (If you need them).
Call me, lets make this happen.

I got the shoes, they were 12 bucks, just waiting for the scooter to sell for parts money. I wouldnt drive the car if I didnt think it was safe. Since I replaced the front brakes and changed the fluid its like a new car. The brakes are very sensitive, make no noise and go straight under full depress. I just want to know as I almost did what a post said on another forum that I found hard to believe about pulling up the carpet and unbolting the seat belt anchore points.

No, parking brake coming way up is the main symptom of a broken adjuster. If you jack up the rear wheels, you'll find that the e-brake isn't doing anything on one side or the other, that's the one that is bad. You'll probably notice your brake pedal firm up after you fix it.

You can get to the parking brake adjustment by simply taking out the console that goes around the parking brake handle, it's not that big a deal. That's where you would go if your cable froze up or had been replaced, but in normal use you never touch it. If you look at it right now you'll see one cable way further forward than the other, the one more forward is the broken one.

Thanks. I wouldnt drive it if I could not stop well. First the call was like it had no vacuum booster. Not uncommon as the previous owers cars all were like that. I saw how worn the front pads were and the brake fluid color and declided to spend a few bucks and replace them. Wow, instead of flooring the brake petal to stop, I only need to press it down half way.

The previous cars I have owned I just have a habit of bleeding nad adjust the rear brakes til they drag. Amazing those cars had holes for brake spoons too.
