When my car got hit, the insurance guy came out and did an estimate, I asked him for the most I could get WITHOUT totaling the vehicle, I got $1300 (bluebook was $1350 or so totaling requires you to buy back the car for its scrap value ~$200) for my 91 and it still has a clean title. Usually the guy will work with you, especially if you're not at fault and its the other drivers insurance.

I work in a bodyshop and do estimating and parts/production/QC.
Now, the guy you called a crook because his sheet was higher than the rest, it is entirely possible that he looked at the damage more in depth than the rest and simply wrote a sheet that's closer to the final figure. Or he could be a crook.
If the damage to your car is minor-ish and no injury claims involved, you can talk to your insurance company about doing a Cash Settlement on the damage, which would leave the title clean as there won't be any claim, you take the money and fix what you can/want privately on the side. If you don't want to go that route, car is likely to be totaled.
If FINAL(as opposed to preliminary, which is what you got so far) repair cost exceeds Market Value Minus Salvage Value, the car will be written off.
At least this is how it's done in BC,Canada.

The insurance guy came to my work on Wednesday and looked at the car. He said the damage was $2500 wich was about the value of the car (no surprise) He said they would get back to me in 24-48 hours.

I have not heard from them since. I tried calling them, left voicemail no answers yet. I expect to hear from them tomarrow at the latest.

The car is very driveable, very little rust; only visble on wheels. The car is very driveable. If I keep the car we will drop the full coverage on it and just keep liability.

take the $2500 insist on no "write off" no "salvage" no "totaling"

tell them I am fine with the price but my title must remain intact and clean. they WILL give it to you. You just might need to fight a little for it.

No, the bodyshop guy is a crook in my opinion not just because of his estimate but the way he treated my neighbor and my estimation of dealing with him at his office. He was way too much like a used car salesman.

He did not look any deeper at the damage than the first guy wich I trust, mainly because my wife's family has used him in past, They remembered my father-in-law who died about 10 years ago. (thats how long they have been in business and how long my wife's family has dealt with them.) They have a clean, professional looking shop that's not overdone.

The second one kept talking about his love of sports cars and after another guy came in to get an estimate on his sports car. He barely looked at me. He quickly finished my estimate and I took my estimate and left.

They guy was unprofessional and decorated his office in a rather over the top expensive way. I've been doing some remodeling on my house and I couldn't help but look at the tile on the floor and the wall decorations and wonder how much money he must of spent on is waiting room/office area. His shop was probably very well equipped as well. (this shop is not in a nice part of town either)

I thought he was just overpriced and unprofessional. It was quite a contrast from the first place I went to.

I would take that offer in a heartbeat.... they haven't offered that, or anything yet.

I did go to my DR and now I am going to my Chiropracter as well. So there will be a small personal injury claim. The Dr prescribed muscle relaxers and pain pills.

The Chiropracter has been making adjustments to my back and it feels a lot better.

WRONG!!!!!!

Your back DOES NOT feel better. Your back will begin to feel better after you get what you want for your car with a clean title.

well don't lie (its immoral right or wrong) but do not volunteer anything either. it will only be used against you. there is on and only one objective with an insurance company. Pay out Nothing. Remember that :-)

lol. Woodie is right. Greenbacks applied to an aching back will make it feel much better. Not trying to hijack the thread or anything, but I have noticed that different insurance companies value your car differently when it comes to a settlement. Example: Geico somehow scans local ads, Autotrader, etc, and comes up with a value. When I asked about Kelly Blue book, etc, I was told they don't use it. Said local ads give a more correct value. Read CHEAPER! My sons car was totaled by another driver recently. Son tboned the other guy after he (other driver) made a left turn right in front of him. My son admitted to the cop that he was doing 50 in the 45 zone. Other driver got a ticket, My son got nothing. The driver had some company named Titan that is related somehow to Nationwide. I never could get in touch with the claims adjuster, always playing phone tag. So when it all washed out we got a letter refusing the claim as my son was "speeding". I was pissed. Called my State Farm agent that we have full coverage with. Told me don't worry, we'll get you straight. I must admit, I've never dealt with a more professional company. Called to check on my son, wanted to know if he needed to see the doctor, etc. Bottom line, they paid me NADA "retail" for the car, which is the usually the highest value. They also paid me sales taxes & DMV fees based on the car's value. Never would have thought I'd get those too.

It's official my little Geo is now worth nothing.... After I argued with the insurance adjuster about their first apprasial ($1800) I got what I consider about the value of the car out of it ($2300). They sent a check made out to me, my wife (also on the title) and the Lein holder of the loan.

Bottom line I get back what I paid so far for the car, the loan I have on it gets paid and I get to keep the now worthless GEO.

If you're ever in the neighborhood I'd love to have you do just that.

I have never done any kind of body work.
