I figure I've still got a ride to work so yeah, I'm not upset about it being devalued. I'm just wondering what will happen if I get hit again???? |

I'm not sure yet... They did not say they were going to change the title but even if they do, I don't see that it matters. I intend to drive this thing until it don't drive no more. I figure I have nothing to lose. This car is now considered a beater and the only value it has is as a ride. Since it runs I think it is worth more than the $200 in settlement I gave up to keep it. I figure I could sell it for at least $500 as a beater. The guy who sold me the car said I could sell it for $1500, my wife wants to try to sell it for $1800. I want to keep driving it for it's fuel economy. It has a lot of problems but I haven't driven a car in years that didn't. It runs, I'm going to keep driving it and live with the problems and the devalued car. |

The car's value only matter if you plan on selling it. Otherwise, it has not dropped in value at all for you. It's utility is extremely valuable and if it works, that is what matters. If you get hit again? Again, if it works... that's all that matters. :p And if it has any problems, please sort them out ASAP with all the fine folks here who can help you. Shoot, that's not bad! I could have that fixed in a few days given my welder, Sawzall and an angle grinder. It doesn't look like anything important was damaged, just the cosmetics. Hell, I am thinking of pulling the damaged quarter on my 4 door with some eye bolts, chain, scrap metal and the back bumper of my Frontier. It looks like fun! |

you paid $200 to keep it which means they totaled it and you now have a salvage title. :-( the problem is there may come a time when get hit again or a tree falls on it etc.. and insurance might be able to claim no responsibility to cover it since it was "totaled" but you did get an impressive amount for it ! |

That "impressive amount" represents the value of the car. It is what I am/was paying for it. I came out ahead by still having a driveable vehicle. The fact that is now worth nothing in the eyes of the insurance company is inconsequential. I could of let it go (still could) and start over. I figure I could get at least $500 out of any car that is driveable and in good mechanical shape. This is not the first junker I have owned and will probably not be the last. I happen to like something about it. It is not an impressive car by any measure. Even it's fuel economy is matchable (at least the for one I drive-30-35 mpg) It's not fast, it's not stylish, It's not the most comfortable ride. It is not an expensive car. It's not flashy, It's nothing they advertise in cars. But something about it makes me smile. Does that make me a metroholic????

well I guess that makes sense. with my van it was different. I could not "let it go and start over" I would never find another one in this condition in this trim package at a price remotely close to what I could afford. but yeah finding another geo especially at that price range would not be so hard. |

Thats safe, glad you are ok tho. Hopefully the car wont total. In MD the law is if the vehicle has damage that comes to 75% of the cars total appraised value then it becomes a totalloss. I dont know about your area, but maybe?

If I was writing an estimate on that quarter panel,it's at least 10+ hours of sheet metal work(if not a complete quarter replacement,it looks very crumpled with lots of kinks and stretched metal and probably hard to access inner damage),plus paint and all the necessary disassembly/reassembly operations. Plus bumper cover. A backyard mechanic without good sheet metal skill will never fix this properly. |

that is why the estimates included a new quarter panel and why the estimate was so much. After the accident I arrived home and sat on my couch and wondered how much it would cost to repair the damage. At first I thought maybe only a few hundred bucks. After I got the first quote I thought it was a bit high. After the second body shop and the insurance man estimated it at a bit higher I figured the first estimate was about right and I had no idea how much it would cost right after the accident. |

All and all you made out alright. When my 81 diesel rabbit got totaled about a year ago (some dumb-ass kid pulled out in front of me), the company offered me $500 for a car I paid $1800 for not 6 months before. On top of that, the other guy tried to file with my insurance company, so now I have a $60 a year "not at fault accident" surcharge until 2013. Landlord said I had to move the car off his property ASAP, so I got fucked out of $1300 cause I didn't have enough time to sue the guy. |
