The night before I left on this trip. I was watching the History chanell. They were talking about Placermining in the Weaverville area. I just drove through there last PM. I stopped on the side of road. When I pecked between the trees I could see an area where it had been strip mined back in the 1850s. It looked like some giant took him hand and ran his fingers down the mnt side. Leaving huge red gouges down the mnt side. When I went through the pass to go though the Wasach Mts today. There are huge new age wind mills right at the beginning of the pass. Since I have left the coast, its been pretty much one big sheet of ice. Everything is froozen.

Not glaciers. Just ice on everything. I am looking at the weather channel this AM. Looks like there is a snow storm closing in behind me. Bummer. This may be a boucne trip. I don't want to get trapped on the wrong side of the Rockie's. Or the Wasach. We'll see |

I had a cool drive in the Colorado Springs today. Very cold. The sprayer bottle froze. I had to stop in Parachute to buy some rubbing alcohol. It fixed it up. I got back on the road after just a few hrs. It felt kinda wierd. I did not realize that the storm behind me was this close. So I am back on the road. My worst MPG. 40. That was going hell bent for leather on the Interstates. 75mph+. Cruising pretty good. My best was from Grand Jct. To CS. 49+ And that was having to really push hard in 3 places going up the Rockies. I will slow things down to only 70 on the Istate. Most of my drive this am was in freezing fog. Same thing for most of NV. I wish I could have stayed longer. Between the weather and the wierd vibe I was getting at my brother house. I just figure to split. Error on the side of caution. But I did get a few shots of the boys and that is priceless |

...and you are on your way back? We were just wishing you a safe journey to Colorado. I've done that. Drove the Goldwing from SoCal to Tucson, AZ, turn around and leave later in the evening. I was younger then.

Something just felt wrong. And I have to go with my gut feeling. The Rocket did pretty good going over the hi passes. One 10,800ft, Vail. The other one was 11,200ft. And our three cly have no power up there. But its best to play it safe. I can slowly work my way back now. I will try and post some pics of the boys. |

I made it over the pass this am. Everyone behind me had to chain up. LOL Suckers. Once I got down past Rifle, Co. it was pretty much smooth sailing. You know your 4x4 sucks, when your climbing up the Vail pass in the ice, snow and slush. When you get passed by a stock Geo Metro. LOL I made it to Lehi, UT. Just out side SLC. I think I am amonst Commies. They don't sell beer on Sunday. Communist! I only wanted one. Its gonna be down below 0 tonight. To cold for me. |

But Utah is a pretty good place to go for a cup of coffee and even espresso drinks these days. Even that is a no-no and used to be hard to get in public.

Hey, Kev! Rich here. Glad you had fun on your road trip to Colorado. I went through there on MY trip back to Encino from Elkhart Indiana. (Classic Transport is History for me now.) I went W/B on US 50 from Kansas to La Junta in the Tornado Country part of Colorado. Then CO10 to Walsenburg. 72 Miles of Scary 2 lane with NO Place to Pull over if you should heaven-forbid break down. I saw a Freightliner Classic Bull Rack Livestock Truck Dead in the Water, so to speak on CO10. There is NOTHING inbetween Walsenburg and La Junta. Walsenburg Very Tiny but nice old western town. North La Veta Pass was a Nightmare! I was fighting a 50+ MPH Headwind going up that 7% Monster Grade plus the Geo Bashers behind me. Then came Fort Garland, Blanca, Alamosa, Del Norte and South Fork. South Fork was completely Iced Over and was the start of Wolf Creek Pass!! 10,850" above! It was 2nd gear in my automatic and 20 MPH going up and going down Wolf Creek Pass. It's like Vail and Eisenhower/Loveland except Wolf Creek/US 160 and Monarch/US 50 are 2 Lane with little to no room for error. Nearing the top of Wolf Creek, I almost Lost it and was headed straight for the Ditch on the Ice. LOL, I had my Steering Wheel cranked hard left while going right. On my Bald-As-Vin-Diesel Tires! Thank God I recovered. I was Glad to see Pagosa Springs. Made it all the way to Cortez and the Walmart Parking Lot for that night. Started that day in Newton Kansas at the Newell's Truckstop; drove 700 Miles that day. (If your going through or stopping in Newton KS, I strongly suggest springing for that Chinese Tui Na Massage upstairs in the Newell's T/S!) My car ran real Crappy going through Colorado and Arizona mostly through US 50 and US 160 (It ran horrible through Flagstaff Arizona too.) and wanted to Stall real bad at the stoplights. My EGR was acting real bad and I had to Constantly adjust the TPS to no avail. The engine still wanted to stall real bad. On Santa Fe Ave. in Flagstaff, I remember having to hold the gas and brake together to keep my car from dying at the stoplights with the asshole Silverados behind me. I still need to address this issue. Still to this day I don't know what's causing it. My car does not like High Altitudes and Cold Temps. Here at home in L.A. SFV it runs fine, however. Kevin, I know the "Rocket" did a heluva lot better than mine did going over Vail and Eisenhower. I can't wait to see your pictures. I took pictures but I don't know how to put them on the computer. I wished you and I could've "caravaned" and went with each other, it would've been even more fun. I don't know, You probably would've Left me in your Dust, the way Mine is running right now. |
