HI everyone..

am wondering what to expect in terms of usual number of miles on the original engine that is possible if a geo is well maintained....Ie. how many miles will it run before needing some awfully expensive rebuild of engine or, ...?

Someone says they will sell us a geo that has 179k miles on it; my nephew can't afford any major expenses on this car purchase, still in high school....so, is it safe to think about buying a geo w/this type of miles on it?

Would very much appreciate any and all advice...

Thk you

Ralph :whistle

I've heard of 300k+ miles without a rebuild. Mine you it would be wise to do a lot of preventative maintenance like changing all the fluids and belts and vacuum lines etc... So long as the car is properly taken care of they will last.

Do a compression test on it. My car has close to 190xxx and running great. many people on here easily go over 200k.
If a head shoots shits on one of these cars it is easy to replace and a lot cheaper than any other car.
You also have to think that any car with close to 200k will need some work. You can't just think of the big expenses either. These cars are so cheap to maintain vs any other car. Also with the gas money he will save he should be able to fix some of the problems.
I'm assuming if he is looking at a geo with 179k he doesn't have a lot of money (which is ok, I don't either. lol), but with saying that he probably won't be able to get a car with low miles for the same price. When I was in high school, my first stick was a metro and I loved that thing due to gas mileage. If it wasn't for the frame rusting, I would have never sold it.

look for frame rust when you buy and do compression check.

agreed !! +1 :deal :thumb

the biggest problems with this car are rust and compression, if you are good on both of these, then the rest falls into place quite cheaply.

I bought mine with 183k on it and at 186k I had to replace the head gasket and rebuild the head due to a bad water pump. I think it would have been fine had the water pump been replaced right away. $40 water pump vs $400 rebuild...unfortunately I had to do both. I wouldn't let the mileage scare you. It's the rust that should give you nightmares! Assuming no rust, buy it and replace the necessary parts to get it/keep it running well. Repairing these vehicles is a breeze and a great way to learn about cars.

382,500 miles on my original unopened engine and transmission.
Getting 49MPG on the current tank.

How long you can expect to run an engine before rebuilding it depends on how well it was designed and now well it was taken care of.

Most G10 engines need a valve job before 200K, but it's not that big a deal to do. There aren't many engines in the world that don't need something by 200K.

What type of mileage is possible w/Geo's?

Such an existential question.

Makes me want to read "Jonathan Livingston Seagull"

Try "Illusions", also by Bach, and you learn that you don't need gas or oil for your Geo. ;) :thumb

ralph, I get 55 mpg highway in the summer with my mods listed below. Now, with non-ethanol, winter gas, driving around town, nothing over 30 miles I got 43.98 mpg. That's with NGK plugs. One more tank and I will decide which plugs I really like. :-/

the goods news is besides rust there really is no "major" expense on these cars. even an engine or tranny can be replaced for a few hundred dollars and you can do it all yourself with minimal tools.

Kinda like that scene in The Matrix when Neo is talking to the bald kid who bends a spoon with his mind...

Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible. Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends, it is only yourself

Yes, as long as rust is not an issue (as mentioned by the previous posters). Where I grew up, rebuilding your car's engine was considered a rite of passage, don't know if it still is where your nephew lives...worst case scenario, he has to do rings and bearings...shouldn't cost much, (only three cylinders), he learns something about cars (get him on here...many online mentors), and he has skills that will last him a lifetime!
