Cold weather tires; Check um!

Ok, a few weeks ago when the weather was nice and warm I corrected all tire pressures to 30 psi and all was good. Now a few weeks later the temp has dropped to 18 degrees and I decide to check the tires again today. All 4 tires had 10 psi. I put them back to 30psi and drives like a dream again. Its a natural reaction for air pressure to decrease in cold weather. If its cold in your area I suggest you recheck your tire pressures and correct. I try to check my pressures every few weeks for max tire life. Just a little hint that makes a big differance. Check your tire pressures regularly. :drivin

Thanks.

But why only 30 PSI? Put it to max sidewall. :o

Thanks for the reminder.....it is appreciated. I know that I don't really check my tire pressure often enough.

Good safety post!

Actually, I've found that 30 psi seems to give the best handling during inclement weather. When the weather gets nicer, then run up to the sidewall rating.

Unless you're driving in snow constantly, I wouldn't run anything less than 40 PSI in my tires. We've had a few snow storms recently and I got around just fine with my 175/70-13's at 45 PSI.

I am also curious as to why only 30 psi in your tires.

Mine call for 40. I do 42 when its not snowy and 35 when its snowy. Its seems to work the best for meh

Good post :gp Thanks for the reminder...... It was cold here last week. My tires had 10,12,12,14. Mine are 195/70/14 and I run around 30/32. Works great for me. Tire load for a 195/79/14 tire is around 1325 lbs. so 4 X 1325= 5300 The weight of my Geo is around 1800 lbs. I would guess. At almost 1/3 of the allowed weight load of the tire I would guess there is not much flex at even 30 lbs. :banana :banana :banana

I agree, max is good. Rides a little rougher but max is good but I myself do not go over max anymore because I have seen too many premature tire failures from over inflation. Been there, done that, not any more. 30 psi for 13 inch tires is good and max aint bad either.

I've ran my 36 PSI tires at 45 for the last 20k miles with no problems, including a lot of that at 60 MPH.

66% drop in air pressure due to the temp change?

I noticed my air pressure drop drastically too. It is a bit strange.

Today I was doing a little reading in my factory service manual for my 95 model that a very generous member here gave me and ran across what the service manual calls for in tire pressures. The original size 13 inch tires according to GM call for 23 psi. I thought that was interesting. Looks like billy knows best with load ratios. Either way, I will stick with the 30 psi to max on side of tire. Just thought the 23 was interesting.

23 is too low for pretty much any road tire that's meant to be driven daily.
