heres what it comes down to....if you are a good mechanic and like being one, it will show and you will be successfull.
Exactly what robertino said....Flate rate is where you make the money. And in my area many shops don't need someone to have ase to be hired. When I was in high school my auto mechanic teacher took questions right out of the ase test and put them in our tests. Many people could answer those questions after studying the book, but sucked when it came to really working on it.

I didn't mean to say that an ASE certification is worthless. I'm just saying that there are several excellent mechanics who have never had a certification...which is fine if you don't ever plan to work for a professional shop or dealership.
I'm not saying that its worthless either, but I disagree with your last sentence. My uncle use to have his ase certs a long time ago and they ran out. They weren't going to pay him any more whether he had them or not. He worked between dealers for 20 yrs, most of the time without the certs. When chrysler shot shits a few years ago, the dealer shut down and laid off everyone. Out of all the mechanics, he called my uncle back to work for his kia dealership (and these aren't small town dealers either).

Like I said im not bashing ase certs at all. I'm just saying that your work ethic and knowledge is going to explain a lot. Obviously though the average person would take their vehicle to an ase tech over a regular tech any day (saying that the price would be the same)....but the main thing is experience. I would take any of my vehicles to my uncle (if I had to) over an ase tech. Its just that simple, experience.

I was fortunate enough to have the dealer I was working for at the time send me to get ASE certified. But back in '93 when i was working for the dealership, I made 4.25 an hour, and the pay did not go up with the certifications. I did however get a 100.00 bonus for each certification I passed.

Auto tech, computer tech, what you describe is exactly the way it is for me at my work with my certifications (Microsoft, Cisco, Security+, etc).
