So I took the little car (91, 3/5) out for a valve stem repair, and learned a couple of things. 42 ft pounds for the lug nuts? Really? Wow. I had no idea, and doubt the PO did either. Someone should add that little piece of info to the things to know about metros buying thread. I know I over torqued them, and I suspect they all have been compromised. Then I learn that the aftermarket rims only allow five threads on the lug nuts, and how that is considered safe enough...... I don't know about you, but "safe enough" and Metro don't seem to jive too well with me, as I have no desire to crash test this car (or any car). My question for the forum today: Are longer / stronger studs available for our little wonders? Anybody got part numbers or source of supply? Edited by jokerb90, Jan 14 2011, 10:07 AM.

Not that I could find for 10mm. I went to 12mm studs. A little drilling and whacking required. Unless you anticipate new brake drums on the rear soon...get drums for later model that is drilled for the meatier 12mm studs. There are other options like swapping out knuckles, etc to get 12's with added braking benefits. Search around here...lotsa info on this swapping stuff. |

Easiest way... go to the bone yard and pull the front knuckles, break asyemblys (both disc and drum) and pull the rear hubs off of a newer (95-01) metro and install on your older one... everything will bolt on and you will get stronger studs, vented rotters and i think the rear drums are upgraded too??? just in all this commotion don't forget the lug nuts too but my suggestion to the soulution is nab the front and rear sway bars and mounts of the newer car as well... you will thank yourself... the front bolt right up, the rear... you may need to modify (drill and run bolts into the floor pan) |

thanks for the info, but there are no local yards -- nearest is an hour away, and they aren't the most helpful bunch. I may be able to get my hands on a newer Swift, will have to check interchange ability between the two.... |
