Piloting a car, takes all your attention. Or it should. In CA you can't talk on a cell phone and drive. They are gonna work on texting next. Hang up and drive. The life you save might be your own childs. |

People should have enough common sense to not do dangerous things while driving. Some obviously do not. As a whole we do not need another law. We have way too many laws. We almost need a lawyer to accompany us walking down the street so we don't break the law. Our court systems are stifled with criminals and new laws that we don't need. There have been a few recent cases in my local news . One involves a man who was too drunk to drive home from the bar so he tried to walk home and got busted for public intox. WTF he was not driving or a danger to himself! Another was a man who got busted for a DUI. He was found passed out in the backseat of his truck. He was to drunk to drive so he was going to sleep it off. He happen to have his truck keys in his pocket and that's why he got a DUI. The officer said he should put his keys outside the truck next time, like on top of a tire. WTF He knew he was too drunk so he did the right thing! As far as the texting and talking, I do it. If I can easily avoid it I will. No big deal ! How about finding murderers or rapists!Everybody should be required to have common sense and we could get rid of 80% EXISTING LAWS! We certainly do not need any more laws! |

Then in that case Superduty the LAW is not the problem. The problem was the dumb shmucks who misapplied the law in both those cases. If a woman hit you full speed because she was texting away you would say something totally different ... |

It's still not the texting that's the issue. It's her lack of better judgment or common sense. I would also be pissed if she just found out her husband died and she was rushing to be with him and that's why she ran into me! We have too many laws! We don't need anymore! |

I agree with you Super, there are far too many laws. While we are on the topic of things there are too many of, I also think that phones should not have the ability to receive text messages, and that they should be permanently mounted to walls and bases with cords and not be mobile at all, that would take care of the whole problem right there. They should bring back pay phones as well and kill off the whole cellular industry, it was a silly idea. |

Bogs my dad would agree with you. He has never had a cell phone but asks to use mine when we are out all the time. I like my phone and all it's functions. Internet, MP3 player, shows pics and videos, note pads, calculator, clock, ect all in my pocket. Pay phone are seldom seen in my neck of the woods now or even years ago. I have been broke down in BFE before in the cold before cell phone were affordable and I don't like it. It is a safety net having a cell phone. We would survive if we didn't have cell phones, look at the amish. It just makes it easier. Not very many people I know still have a land line. It is an added cost and you can't take it with you like a cell phone. Laws were made because people before us were stupid! Now we want to make more laws to try to fix peoples stupidity! |

We have the same law here, came in last year. Still most drivers seem to talk and text holding the phone. Really makes no difference here, as it is still okay to shave, pluck your eyebrows, apply make-up, eat a double whopper or turn around to the back seat to smack the kids while you are driving. But Don't Touch the Phone. I don't hardly even talk when I am driving, I have a GPS attached to the windshield and the radio station stays where it is until I can change it when stopped at a light. Far to many bad drivers for me to watch, then have my attention put to other things. Driving 36 years, 1 accident (ditched my car in a blizzard). I was a Health and Safety Officer for years and there is no such thing as an accident. there is a root cause for everything. |

I guess some people can't multi-task. Some have trouble walking and chewing gum at the same time. Now is the time to recognize your weaknesses act accordingly! |

If I ever receive a text while driving, I just give my phone to my passenger(if no passenger, phone waits till I park the car) and ask them to read it to me. If it's important i'll have them reply for me also. My girl is the only passenger I ever have and she doesn't mind knowing my business anyway. Phone calls I put on speaker phone. I have no problem watching the road and talking at the same time. Edited by JimR, Jan 17 2011, 06:48 PM.

nobody can multi task. its physically impossible. the human brain is an amazing thing but multi tasking is something that is not currently possible for it to do. no matter what you THINK you can do its NOT multi tasking. What you can do AT BEST is prioritize rapid task switching. before you say well I can breath. No you can't. your brain stem does the breathing and the beating NOT YOU. its a "seperate" processor a seperate CPU so to speak dedicated to running these things for you. |
