Exactly. 2a. requiring something you don't have. 3 for require. you require oxygen. someone suffocating NEEDS oxygen. we all "require" oxygen. you require food. someone starving NEEDS food. Need. a requirement you do not have. Require. something you must have. if you don't have it you require and need it. if you have it you just require it. |

you were only allowed to pick one number. you picked 2(a) and 3......looks like you lose nerys. Do you really argue like this in real life with random people? |

There are a few ways to use the word 'require'. However according to a Google search, 'require' and 'need', when used in the same context, means the same.

don't worry i'm sure that will be argued against, because that was just a google seach. ( I agree with you though) I'm not saying they are 100% the same, but most people use them or would use them in the same context. I could really care less what a definition says about a word. If everyone says it a different way than the definition says, I will agree with the people. |

and I have no problem with that. I was not the one who started the "nitpicking" on word definitions. Reread the thread :-) hehe the way I see it is this simple and logical. you get a flat tire. you NEED a new tire. you get a new tire and install it. Do you still need a new tire now? answer that and you have your answer. seems pretty simple to me. Edited by nerys, Jan 20 2011, 01:57 PM.

yes you still need the tire. you have to have it. You need it whether you have it or not. and when it came to nitpicking I was just giving you shit...yet you couldn't let it go. |

have you ever had something that someone asked if they could have it? Jim: Can I have your ratchet steve? steve: No, I need it. Even though steve has it, he still needs it. |

thats context. the context is different. Your also twisting the meaning. he requires the ratchet if he were to give it to you he would then "need" it hence the statement. No I still need it. the use of need here is not unto itself empty in a vacuum. also need is also technically correct if he has not "performed" the task yet. he still needs to "fix" something so the need is actually what he needs to do not so much the ratchet. yes coche this example IS semantics. |

he would need it whether he gives it up or not. and how do you know he was going to "fix" something? maybe he was just taking it apart.....lol. I still disagree with you, but lets both agree to disagree. |

You need, in the sense of it being necessary, new tires. You obtain these tires. So, do you still need new tires? I think the question of asking whether you need /new/ tires is misleading. You don't need specifically /new/ tires but you still do need, in the sense of it being necessary, tires regardless. You need, in the sense of it being necessary, the ratchet. You may still have it in your hands so do you need it anymore? The answer is yes because it is necessary to complete your task. You will need the ratchet regardless of whether you have it or not simply because having a ratchet is a necessary tool to complete this task. |
