Need Help ASAP; Convertible Bearing Seal?

I dropped my car off with a guy to press in my new bearings. (Verts have the fat one piece) He's telling me there is an issue with the seals on the Verts not having a seal up there and he can't put the hubs back on the car without destroying them and I'm tying up his only lift...

I thought the Vert bearings were self sealed and didn't require anything else.
I wouldn't feel bad about this, but I bought the parts and told him I had everything so he agreed to jump on it first thing today while I was at work.

Is there something I am over looking here? He's trying to find one locally and I'm not having any luck on any of the parts places that I can find in the local area. I don't want to shut down his shop for a day because of stupid seals...

For what it's worth, the Verts have a grease seal on the inside of the hub to protect the already sealed bearing from getting nasty slop slung all over it.

I don't remember ever seeing that mentioned so there it is. :)
I don't have a [art number but they are roughly $15 per seal.

EDIT: If you aren't in a bind that causes you to need them in less than 1 day, then you can get Convertible (also MKI Turbo) bearing seals for about $6 at Rockauto.com -

Since this is the same bearing as the 95+ Metros, I'm assuming that newer models can use this information as well.

Sorry I could not be of help but I have never replaced mine. Thanks for the info. I will know what to do if I ever have to. I dont think we were ignoring you. We know almost everything thing but not everything. Verts, as you have found out, have a few diffident things that make them unique . :thumb :banana :banana :banana

I know I wasn't being ignored. I was just in a situation where I needed clarification lickity-split and it wasn't able to happen like that.

Like I mentioned above, everything is all good now. Installed and rolling smoothly again.

Easy, if there is supposed to be a photo there then I don't see it.

For the Convertibles, MKI Turbos and 95+ cars, there are not 4 bearings up front (2 per side). There are only two fat bearings (1 per side) that must be pressed in with a machine shop press. I know I've read that the base model Metros, with their 2 bearings per side, can be knocked out by hand. This is not the case with the Verts and others mentioned.

Base model Metros, 89-94, use bearings like the first picture. Verts and others use the fat bearing pictured below that:

And, as I have mentioned previously, there is also a grease seal on the inside of the Vert-etal bearings that I did not know was necessary. The 89-94 base model Metros have one seal per side of the hub... (1 seal per bearing = 4 seals & 4 bearings)

Credit again to Pacapo for this diagram showing the Vert/Turbo hub. #5 is the seal I did not know about. (This diagram does not apply to base model Metros...

Thanks Jonathan, I didn't state that very good, although what you pictured here is cool. I hadn't even got around to looking at bearings so I didn't even realize the verts were different then the others.

I was wondering if you were replacing bearings on all four axles.

Were you having problems or just replacing them because of high miles?

Ohhhhhhhh....

I had a bad driver's side front bearing so I changed out both of them. It was also time for a new passenger side Cv axle so I swapped in re-manufactured front axles at the same time. Now I have a new, free rolling front end. I think I still need an alignment as it's pulling to the right a little bit it's pretty good now. Ready for another 150,000 miles.
