Hey out there I have a problem! Replaced my water pump and installed a new timing belt since the water pump was off, Thought I took care not to move the crank pulley as I did the work. My G 10 is a 1997(as some of you know) Anyway got it together went to start it up and Snap, Crackle and pop, pop as if it was out of time. Pulled the dist cap, check that #1 was a the top (Dead Center?) Checked Crank pulley and observed the mark on the pulley at the timing cover mark. No luck. Just as a note, I removed the air conditioning pump , mounting bracket and two lines leading into the fire wall. I did not plug them, just removed them. Don't think this has anything to do with engine not firing. I need help. Should I remove the timing cover and re-check the timing? Etc. Dave ( old guy) Henderson, NV |

I did this. It's not so much a matter of Top Dead Center as it is aligning the two (2) sets of timing marks. Maybe you did this but #1 you align the lower crank gear tooth that has the dot on it with the down arrow on the block. #2 There will be a mark on the end of the Cam gear tooth that will align with the "V" notch on the valve cover. They should be close right now. Looks like... Click for larger pic.Align the two sets of marks and crank the engine around twice by hand and the marks should align. I use a ratchet and 17mm socket on the crank shaft nut. You can set it at TDC BEFORE you do this if you pull the #1 plug, put your finger over the spark plug hole and use your left hand and ratchet/17mm socket to rotate the crankshaft until you feel air pressure then check the lower timing mark. The next question would be did the tensioner come loose? The spring is fairly useless for tension so I add a little more with my hand before I tighten the 12mm tensioner nut. I still tighten the 10mm spring nut. And sorry, this method means taking the pulleys and cover off... again.

Roger on all the info. I used your blog when pulling everything apart. I just now pulled the pulleys off , had a cup of coffee and am going back at it. I have already pulled the plug and dist cap and have the 17mm in place. Just have to finish the coffee . Question! When I replaced the serpentine belt I "thought" I made sure nothing moved, but I did have a little problem sliding the belt on. Would the slightest movement cause the misfiring.? Dave |

One tooth either way will make a difference. And the timing mark is not that accurate, IMHO. Pinging - granted the ignition timing is correct (5-8 BTDC) and it is one tooth advanced. Very poor low rpm performance and good power above 400-5000 rpm and it's one tooth retarded. If you want you can cut the timing cover in half and that will give you access to the tensioner 10mm nut (long) and I cut a hole in the bottom half of my timing cover to access the tensioner 12mm nut. That way I can set the engine at TDC and pull the belt off and move it. Of course after I cut the cover I no longer had any need to change the belt, until it stretches. Cut cover...

The job is done! When I removed the old belt as I mentioned I thought nothing moved, however I guess there was enough tension on the camshaft to change position about 45 degrees. After aligning everything, I test started it and it fired right up. Put everything back together w/o a problem looking back it was not a very hard job. Always easier after you do it once jI though about cutting the timing cover, but did not. If I have a problem with the belt then I will cut it in half as you recommend Thanks much for your feed back. Next thing I tackle is some under body rust that I spotted, right under both doors. Not sure what to do yet, will probably cut it out, and replace with sheet metal or fiber class, whatever seems easier.Again ThanksDave Henderson,NV |
