Suggestions on what it can be? its not any of the pulleys and its not the exhaust as I suspected. what in the world could it be? it used to be it only did it as the engine decelled through 1000-800 rpm at idle. at normal 600-700 rpm idle no sound. now the sound is almost all the time wheels and components are tights pulleys are tight no wobble appear fine PUSHING on the pulleys while engine is running has no effect on sound. Pushing on the engine itself has no effect on noise. I will record it later its more than loud enough to make it to recording. it sounds like a tail pipe rattling but the exhaust is tight. no wobbles or anything. engine otherwise operates perfectly no issues. could it be related to my dying tranny? what in the world would make this noise that is none of what I already checked. although sounds can "bounce" rather easily in a car it appears to be coming from the passenger side. |

My right front headlite housing (plastic) was loose & did the same thing you described. Check that. |

One of my rattles turned out to be the alternator bearings. The alternator siezed and smoked the drive belt. Another one of my rattles turned out to be the timing belt idler bearing. The bearing lost it's balls, and the outer bearing housing ripped a hole in the timing cover, and scrapped the hell out of the water pump pulley. |

While I have experienced lots of noises from things such as this in the engine bay - rattling was not among them... Disconnect the exhaust pipe at the bottom of the manifold, still rattle? Migh help isolate where you need to focus your effort. Alternatively you could use the big screwdriver/stethoscope trick to try and isolate the noise. Kind of a long shot but what about the bushings in the shifter assembly? |

hmm never thought of the rattle being at the other end of the exhaust and "going up" the pipe so I hear it up front I will have to test that. |

Had a 98 taurus 3.0 L that the cat rattled like crazy on. No way to rod it out as you couldn't get to it. It had 2 cats side by side & too many bents in the system. I tried running a couple very long sheet metal screws through the converter & into the honeycomb material, but it wouldn't work. Has worked in the past, but not on this one. Had to replace the cat assembly. Try hitting the cat and see if it rattles inside. The usually will if they're broke lose inside. Edited by Car Nut, Feb 10 2011, 04:57 PM.

No need (but I will shoot one anyway) when I left work tonight I went to the back while it was cold (did not start it yet) grab the tail pipe and just shook it up. I heard the noise. Sounds like its coming from the center. ie around resonator/cat since its 100% brand new except for the cat I am guess its the cat. phewww at least it means its not the engine (I did not think so its running so well) and not the tranny getting worse :-) tomorrow I will try and track down exactly where its coming from. then again I might wait till sunday its supposed to get REALLY warm here sunday 50' !! i am having that same weird hard to impossible to pinpoint rattle, but it only happens after it warms up.. i knew it was somewhere around the CAT but unable to isolate it. even after i poured oil all over it..lol it still squeeked. so now after reading this, i am guessing the noise is coming from inside the cat.. i wonder if i bash it with a hammer a time or 2 if it might distort the metal enough to silence the squeeky rattling noise. |

Dacflyer, My noise is not coming from the cat. because I just installed a new cat. Tonight I replaced the cap and rotor thinking that the old c&r was worn out and causing my engine to get out of timing somehow. When I rotated the cap towards the firewall I noticed that it would not rotate because it hit the stop. The timing was about 5-6 degrees. After I installed the new cap and rotor I still had the dissy hitting the stop (dissy turned all the way to the firewall) and the timing was 8 degrees. New cap and rotor changed the timing. But the rattle is still there. Gremlins, gremlins, gremlins.................. |
