3cy/5speed
Manual Transmission
+123k miles

Is anyone out there available to help me rebuild my transmission? I am very hands on and technically competent. I have a place to do the work if need be; I am also willing to travel (100 mile radius) to get the help.

I could save and pay someone to do this, but I would really like to learn how to do it myself. If it comes down to it, I will pay someone to teach me how to rebuild my transmission. I can not afford to send it to a shop.

Thanks

Please just call me; "Schultz"

cryboy,
our sister member, Jittney, did her own rebuild with help from Murph.
Via the internet.
Pm and chat-room.
If I understand right, she had never before attempted such an in depth repair on her own.
I am sure, since you say you have facilities and tools, that you could do the same.

!Oh!

She kicked ass too. Her's was a very worst case unit. The cases were shatterd. From the inside. Also one of our friends just finished their build. I Gerryjarcia I think. :thumb I will be in tomorrow and Sun AM. PST I will check back then. What is the problem with this unit? Most common problem with our trans. Is second gear engagment teeth. Both on the slider and the gear it self. Next most common is the diff bearing on the narrow side. One bearing is a 6307, the other a 6007. Its real small. Let me know :thumb There is a thread here on splitting the case. If you have any doubts. Don't do it. Or take pics.

Welcome to your new forum, cryboytheman! :coffee

Ohio? Awful lot of Geos in Ohio. Good chance someone in Ohio can help you but look at the case splitting link Mr. Murf mentioned: http://geometroforum.com/topic/1387687/1/

When would you plan to start?

Install good used unit to get it back on the road quickly. Build your old one over time & save it for a backup.

yes, hruehl and I tore my tranny apart last weekend. great learning experience! depending upon what's wrong with yours (if it's more than just some worn out synchros) you might wanna buy that tranny Johnny has available. worn out gears can get mighty expensive.

fyi, Mr. Murf 59 is our transmission specialist here on the boards. really nice guy. if you've got some questions about anything tranny related shoot him a pm and he'll do his best to help answer your questions.

welcome to the forum. this place is great!

Thanks to all for all of the awesome replies. I have a second car, so there's no rush to get the red beast back on the road, other than the fact that I like driving it. My wife and I live in a warehouse space, with nowhere for me to wrench and have fun. I do have a buddy that's willing to let me borrow his garage for awhile. I'm going to go scope out his place tomorrow to see if it's a place where I can pull the tranny.

I'm thinking about pulling it out and brining it back home to work on it; that way I can spring up my computer and ask questions as I go along.

I'll keep you all posted on where I am.

Thanks again for the encouragement. You folks are awesome!

Make sure you support the engine when you take the trans out. Two of the three motor mounts are on the trans. Leaving the engine hanging can tear the remaining one. Like Mr Mullet said. Go for the used and then build the other at when you can.

Is there a step by step guide on removing the tranny? I imagine I'll figure it out as I start to dig into it, but if there's something already posted....

Also, here's the repair how-to for the internals:
http://geometroforum.com/topic/1387687
The only specialty too you'll need is a shop press, you can get one at harbor freight that will do what you need.
