Help Rebuilding a Tranny in Cleveland, OH; Bad syncros

To put the record straight....I didn't rebuild the transmission....though it was my intent.
It wasn't worth fixing.
It was a dizzy of a job for me to get it apart.
Mr Murf's advice went from 'be gentle on it' to 'maybe try more force' to 'bang away on it'
It did come apart....eventually.
I learned a lot even without rebuilding it.

@ cryboytheman, I second Car Nut's suggestion to find a good spare and then rebuild yours in your leisure time.
A good tip from Mr Murf was for me to use a long piece of oak (in my case) from the firewall to the radiator cross member and tie up the engine for extra support when you have to undo 2 of the 3 engine mounts. A rachet strap worked better than a standard rope, and it gave me more control for ajusting the engine when I put in the next transmission.
I had to loosen up the passenger CV mount on the back of the block to give me enough slack to attach the transmission to the engine. Don't know if you'll run into that, but I thought I'd throw that out there.
Let us know if we can help. :news

just found your post. Welcome to the forum. I am glad that there is another Geo owner in Cleveland. I live on the west side....but my job is out east. My little 98 gets a workout (25 miles each way).

I'm glad you found another trans. I've checked the Pull-a-parts on both the east and west side and there are no 5speeds at any of them. Only automatics.

Glad you joined us

Yours was a very worst case unit too. Even the cases were shatterd. But our friend kept after it until she had it all the way down. :thumb

After you split the case you still need to work on the internals. This thread is the best ever that explains how to pull apart the gears. Lots of pics and good explainations. Just be sure you get a press. The way DR. BILL pulls his gears apart is a little hard. GET A PRESS.

Good luck

Dayle1960 beat me to it :D

That guide by DR. Bill is what I went by when i rebuilt my transmission almost 1000 miles ago. A shop press is almost mandatory in my opinion, although Bill does his rebuild without using one. It's worth the 150 bucks at harbor freight to get a shop press, even if you only us it once and then sell it. I needed to get kind of creative when pressing off some of the bearings/gears. When you get that far, post your questions and we can walk you through every step.

My advise is to get a digital camera (if you don't already have one) and take a billion pictures of every step. I have lots of pictures from my rebuild and I can help you reference just about anything. Mr. Murf really knows his stuff with these transmissions, so I would go to him with 99% of my more technical questions.

Good luck, take lots of pictures and post lots of pictures for us!!

Sorry I am on the wrong coast. I will check back in later today. Please start you own thread and we will see what we can do. What exactly is going on with your trans. Post it in your brand new baby thread. And we will help it grow

where is Englewood? I am in Sebastian and I'll help you if I can.

EDIT: Oh, ok, Englewood is about 3 hours away from me. If we can work out some scheduling, I will still help out in any way I can. But I work and go to school in the evenings so my time is limited.

I use my pnumatic 1/2" drive. But a good way. Figure out which way it has to go to turn loose. Spin the 5th set feeding a rag in between the gears until it won't turn any more. Then get after it hard with a half inch breaker bar and the correct socket. That nut can be reused several times. If not take it to your local wrench. And give him or her a few $ and have them knock it loose.

-1 ......pooh on the power tools or the local wrench
You can do this yourself.
Jittney lays down the gauntlet: ahem.... if this mom did it, you can, too.
Jittney waits for the response :D

She is correct. She is the only one I know that when she needed to take her G10 block to the machine shop. She put it in her back pack and rode her bicycle to the machine shop. Suck it up dude. LOL Thanks for putting me back on the straight and narrow. lol
