-1 ......pooh on the power tools or the local wrench
You can do this yourself.
Jittney lays down the gauntlet: ahem.... if this mom did it, you can, too.
Jittney waits for the response :D

Or you if you find a piece of slender, thin, and hard plastic then you could jam that between the gears with out worry of ruining them. I tried the rag and it just was torn up by the gears. Something thin, like a plastic kitchen cutting surface. Or maybe a thin piece of wood. That is what I used when I pulled my 5th gear off.

I would it into two gears at the same time to lock it up.

For future reference, take a 16p nail and grind it down on a bench grinder until it will fit in the stake of that 5th gear nut. Then you can use the nail and a small hammer to gently tap out the stake on that nut. Once you have tapped the nail in past where you ground it, the rounded shank of the nail will help to push the stake out into a more rounded shape that will allow it to spin more easily. This technique also works well on axle nut stakes.

You can remove the shift selector housing and reach inside that cavity and, using a flat blade screwdriver, manually shift all three shift forks all the way either up or down to lock up the transmission. Once you do this you can use a breaker bar and socket on the nut and a hammer on the end of the breaker bar. The impact of the hammering on the breaker bar will help you loosen that nut better than just using shear strength. I don't think they're on there all that tight, so you shouldn't need a ton of force once you get that nut adequately un-staked.

Let me know if you need pictures. I have a ton of them.

There are 4 check balls. 3 of them go in the shift rails in the case. One goes under the 5mm allen set screw in the mixing head for 5th gear. Its an interlock. It must be in there. :thumb
