cause it,s tight in there and if you drop a bolt, it's kinda hard to roll the whole car around to get the bolt out of the inspection hole.

Been there, done that, rebuilt tranny because of it.

Right 00. Thanks. That's what I figure. Hard to turn the whole car on it's side and shake out a bolt if dropped. :x

I would not plan on dropping a bolt though. If I did drop something, I'd just have to pull the tranny anyway, which is what I may have to do, but I like the option of possibly not having to.

Brainstorm....I just may try it at the junkyard for a practice attempt. ;)

Here was the idea.....diagram
Pull the shifter rod (#25) back as far as it will go.
Peel the dust cover (#30) back out of the way.
You will see the flange of the seal (#31).
It is pressed in there, but I found it can be gently persuaded to slide back on the rod....exposing the whole seal.
I wrapped a short length of latex glove around the small end (opposite the flange) and pressed the seal back in.
It may work, it may not.....but I'd give it the 15 minute try.
Perhaps you'll have a better idea.

Yes Jittney, that is what I'm looking for.

Not sure exactly what you mean here though "...wrapped a short length of latex glove around the small end (opposite the flange)..."

Forgive me for being so dumb. Can you explain that for me a little more please?

It may not work, but I agree with you that a quick fix is certainly worth the effort.

Thanks.

Costco sells boxes of latex gloves.
The latex is very thin and flexible.
I cut a piece about 1.5 inches by 3 inches and stretched/wrapped it around the exposed seal.
I tried to get it as snug around the shaft as possible.
kinda like putting on a scarf.....and then pushed the seal back inside the transmission housing.

Just throwing out an idea.

Suppose I cut off the end of the shift rod about 2 cm from the "T" that connects to the stick.
Welded a male threaded allthread to the end that I cut off.
Pulled the boot.
Can I then pull the seal and replace it, since there wouldn't be that "T"?
Then welded a nut onto the 2cm shaft remaining on the "T". so it would thread back on to the allthread and make the shift shaft a unit again.
Here's my attempt at a drawing of what I am trying to explain. It seems to me that the seal would slide off the outside end of the shaft this way and a new one could slip back on. Then, thread the "T" onto the shift shaft, snug up the boot, and bolt up the stick linkage.

Please feel free to give feedback. Rip it to shreds (pros, cons) so we can see if it will work or not.
Welding the allthread would take place before slipping on the new seal to prevent cooking it.

That is a creative idea.
I have a spare shifter rod I'll send you so you can try it out....if you want to try it.
Let me know.

Jittney, PM on the way.

The constant rotating back and forth of the shifter during shift action will back off the threaded section. If you rewelded it after install it might work.

Great feedback, thanks. I'm looking for negative feedback so I can figure out if it will work before attempting it.

I don't see how it could it to back off (or thread in further) since both ends of the shaft are fixed, one end is bolted in the transmission and the other end is bolted to the shaft that goes on back to the stick shift. Threadlock should omit even any wiggle that might occur.

Yes?

Thanks Jittney. Got the PM's.
