What color smoke? No its not normal. Did you replace the valve seals during the rebuild?

You should have. Are you losing any water out of the radiator?

my 99 does this every cold start, its the valve seals, the 16v sohc engine seals wear out and they smoke on startup

well i guess that's on the to do list.... is there a specific valve spring compressor that fits in the tiny cyl head? i rented a valve spring compressor from O'Reilly and couldn't use it because it was way to big and ended up using a 90° needle nose pliers to push down the retainer and a really small needle nose pliers to grab the retainers. in other words... total P.I.T.A.

I am sure there is a spring compressor for these but none of us on this forum have one. LOL Its been done so many ways and with so many adaptions and contraptions.

16 valve engine? You can just about get the springs off with your fingers. Try an open end wrench. Get someone to help. (No icon available for PITA :hmm ) Plug the oil drain holes in the head so you don't loose any of the retainers.

i will try that when i get to do the valve stem seals. but i forgot to say that the cylinder head that's in the car it came from a 92 vitara and the two exhaust valves i replaced where from the stock head that came out of the car.

my question is could it be possible that the G13 valve stem is thinner than the G16 ones, even though they look the same but i didn't bother measuring them with a caliper to check the thickness of the stem on both of the valves.

Sir, yes sir!

:gp

Nice detective work on your part! I regularly use rockauto as a parts interchange look-up, glad to see others use it like that as well.

And, yes. The SOHC 16V engine has poor valve seals.

Just for the sake of contributing, you also don't have to remove the head to do this job. I do it all the time. I have an adapter that fits the spark plug threads for my air compressor. I pressurize the cylinders with a light amount of compressed air to hold the valve in place while removing the retainers and springs.

If you just paid for a new head gasket, no sense in paying for another one.

Remember, the valve seals come with an installer sleeve, usually a clear plastic tube looking thing. Be sure to put that over the valve stem before installing the seal to avoid nicking the seal. That's the number one reason of smoke even after new seals, they get cut on the sharp edges of the stem and negates it's operation.
