hmm my set I just put in didn't have sleeves, but the top of my valve stems were chamfered, so no sharp edges.

It could be application dependent.

Just for the sake of contributing, you also don't have to remove the head to do this job. I do it all the time. I have an adapter that fits the spark plug threads for my air compressor. I pressurize the cylinders with a light amount of compressed air to hold the valve in place while removing the retainers and springs.

If you just paid for a new head gasket, no sense in paying for another one.

Man you guys are on your game. I will take the "installer sleeve" comment in when I get my valves done. I am pulling the head off now and figured I'd look up what I am doing even though it seems pretty straight forward. Glad I did and thanks for the tips.

got a 2000, with 80k easy miles.

smokes a lot on start up, and some while idling.

is it WORTH doing the valve seals? or will they just go away again?

my nephew just graduated high school, and I am giving the car to him.

i REALLY don't want to take the valve train out of it & mess it up,

it runs GOOD as is, i would rather leave it alone....what should I do?

i have a timing belt, new AC & alternator belts, and a water pump. that's 50% of the way there...and I am comfortable with all that. (gonna find timing belt how to on here soon)

but i do NOT want to mess with the valves & adjusting them back :(

this forum makes it sound like a lost cause, just drive it & let it smoke, since it could be the valve guides:
