I was ready to rebuild top and bottom of my G10 and waiting for parts when the intermittant starter problem turned worse. I had the car towed home and tested the little wire from ignition at the starter...it lights up,I had the starter bench tested ,they said its fine.I replaced the positive and negative wires to battery...my next thought is the ignition wire may be too low voltage.I read that a ford relay might remedy situation....is that what the firewall mounted roundish part that they list as a solenoid is?also known as relay? |

I had a problem with my starter. Sometimes it would click but not start. The battery which was 3 years old had a bad cell. After I replaced the battery, the problem was solved. It's possible that a new battery can be defective too. The other thing that comes to mind is the ignition switch. |

Welcome to your new forum, uroborosisland! Here is the thread for a Ford starter solenoid on a Geo. http://geometroforum.com/topic/1964712/1/ Good suggestions by 96Geoman, eh. Another item that comes to mind will be the relays in the box between the battery and fender. Corrosion and wire breaking, which leads to the clutch pedal switch above the clutch pedal/arm. My problem was the floor mat sneaking under the pedal. Part #14http://geometroforum.com/topic/4018655/ |

Well Thanks for those ideas.since I have the intake unbolted from rebuilding top and bottom ends I have easy access to the starter . I tried the screwdriver starting method and the starter spins but does not engage, does this mean the solenoid or bendix is not working now ?This is an automatic with power to the little wire on starter when in start key position and napa said it tested good.Am I correct in thinking the solenoid is really not working now even though it was at napa?I ran a wire from battery to little tab on solenoid and screwdriver jumped the solenoid with only a spinning non engaging starter... so solenoid not working?well thanks again for your thoughts on this. |

The function of the solenoid is to first extend the drive and when the drive is extended then spin the starter motor. Maybe the drive is bad. It has a one way clutch built in so it drives the flywheel but does not over speed the starter when the engine starts. When you let off the key the drive retracts back into the starter. This is not an uncommon starter type failure. The drive is replaceable. Take the starter out you should be only able to turn the drive in one direction freely, the other way the armature in the starter should turn with the drive. |

The Ford Solenoid worked for me and my 97 Geo Metro. Thanks! Edited by brbdoc, Aug 16 2014, 01:04 AM.
