Wont pass emissions. No lights on, three systems reading not complete,( EGR, O2, CATALYST) Their working just not reseting or completing the test. Any ideas?? help! Last year a loose battery terminal prompted everything. But the guy I got it from had no problems for the previous 4 years or so. Even after the engine was changed. The car has 172000 miles this engine about 100000 now. This engine has been inthe car about 4 years. And no recent work. The light comes on and goes off durring start up. Between myself and the garage about 200 miles so far with the snap on scanner conected. Just cant get them to reset. Scanner dosent show any faults. Just reading not completed. Thanks for the help. benjen - Welcome aboard! Is this car new to you? Please give us some background (if you can) around any recent work done on the car and how many miles on the engine. This will help to get the most useable responses from the forum. Has this car failed these tests before? |

Welcome to your new forum, benjen33! So there is no Check Engine Light. It could be burnt out, unless it come on for a second when you turn the car on. "Last year a loose battery terminal prompted everything." Means what? You could use a code reader to check and clear the codes yourself. The one thing connecting the EGR, O2, CATALYST would be the ECM. If you can't read the codes at all then I'd suggest disconnecting the battery for 2 hours, reconnecting it and driving it for a few days. You may need 30-40 starts/stops to get enough information in the ECM for it to throw coads or start working properly.

what's your typical driving habits, you may not have driven the car enough or in the correct way for the car to test all the systems, you need to drive in a certain manner for the car to run the EGR and catalytic tests, and they may have to be run as many as 5 times before it has built the history necessary to pass the testing. |

I have the same problem. I replaced my map sensor and erased the code using Auto Zones computer. When I went to test my emission I failed because my cars computer wont reset/has not data on it. Did you get yours to work??? I have a Geo Metro LSI 96. Thanks |

How long ago did you erase the codes? Cars have to do what's called a "drive cycle" which usually involves a certain number of engine on off situations, driving so far above 35 mph, 45, etc, etc. Each manufacturer is different. You just have to put some miles on it. Emission stations have to turn you away if all the system monitors are not returned to the "ready" stage before the "drive cycle" is done. Keeps folks from just reseting their computers & getting the emissions test done before the ck engine light comes back on.

the EGR and CAT monitors will never run until after the 02 sensor monitor s run and pass most likely your front 02 sensor is out to lunch , either too slow or amplitude is low or the heater is non functional bad enough to not run the monitor but not bad enough to code look in GM mode 6 GM Mode 6 your snapon scan tool can see Mode 6 - and Mode 5 the 02 sensor test may be in either if you have a graphing scan tool , look at the front 02 sensor waveform (a solus or a MT2500 graphing ) is it cycling from rich to lean and back in 100ms or less at 2k rpm hot ? do not frak with the rear 02 sensor my cat monitor will run and pass with the rear 02 sensor connected but wrapped in a rag and nestled in around the area of the rf upper strut top .... the EPA would wet their pants if they knew about that .....
