Haha, well, apparently they saw me complaining and the keys arrived today.
I've got it on there nice and tight now.

So I want to do something I've never done before in my life and re-use the timing belt. It's got less then 3K miles on it. Anyway I was an idiot and didn't mark it when I removed it, and the marks are worn off, so can anyone tell me what teeth the marks should be at?

ALSO, double checking: I have a 94 with the cam pulley that has two grooves in it. The cam pin is supposed to point DOWN, and the notch in the gear is supposed to point UP (lining up with the notch), correct?

There are no marks on a timing belt, every tooth is the same, it just doesn't matter.

Crankshaft key and timing mark on the sprocket should be pointing UP.

Camshaft pin should be pointing DOWN with sprocket notch pointing UP.

Thanks, I put it back together, made sure the right side of the belt was taught and started it up, it runs, I'll set the timing and see how it drives now :)

With the key replaced, it still has the vac flutter and acts seriously retarded.

I'm going to try advancing it two teeth just for the fun of it. :)

Advancing it one tooth made it drive awesome, but it clearly needed to be more advanced
Advancing it two teeth clearly made it too advanced, the flutter was replaced with "wander" - and though I had TONS of low end power, it simply could not accelerate above 3KRPM.

The woodruff key is dead on, both pulleys are dead on and not loose at all. I still have no idea what could be causing this.

I reset the timing to 1 tooth off. It takes me 40 minutes to do the timing belt on this car, counting setting ignition timing, set up and clean up, and leisurely drinking a cup of coffee.

48mpg if I drive aggressive.
52 City normal driving
54 Combined (mostly city)
58 On the highway, more if it is flat and constant flow.

Saw fourdoor (Frank) on the road on my way home, forced him to pull over and tried to buy him coffee. He countered and bought me coffee. We talked about Geos for a while :P

Sweet! :thumb

It's a good feeling to get that 54-58 mpg. :)

Coffee, eh. That's probably a better way to get other Geo drivers to stop than the traditional wrench throwing. ^o)

Split your cylinders with gas and sighn grooves
When you see the white whale
Break your keys and advance your cam gears
IF YOU WISH TO PREVAIL

These three pistons are what propel me
MPG thrust in the sky!

Baseline reading complete! Finally after around four months or so . . . and only 3,000 miles . . . now I just need some free time. First step, install and tune the MegaSquirt! Maybe this Friday. Anyone got a basemap for the MSII or am I going to have to start from scratch? :)

By this weekend I'll be done with all but one of my classes. I'm getting pretty settled into this new job, but it's still taking a ton of my time.
Still pulling good HP numbers, though my AFR gauge and MPGuino lost power for some reason, soon I hope to have time to troubleshoot it . . .
If all goes well, I should have time to install the MS some time next week.
