So some of you have been listening to my rants about my low mpg. After 150 highway miles I am only seeing 30 mpg. So I went into autozone today, borrowed their compression tester and I was getting around 70 on all cylinders dry. I am wondering if that sounds too low? My engine runs great just not getting the best mpg. Could a head gasket leak effect all 3 cylinders? My motor has 139k on it. Is that enough to wear the rings on ALL cylinders? Perhaps I did the test wrong, but I did check it twice. I didn't do it web because auto zone was closing. Wondering if my Geo is ready to die or if there is something I can do! |

I realized I didn't open the throttle when I did the test. That probably didn't give it an accurate reading. S*&t! I guess I will go back and do it again tomorrow

I'd redo the compression test. You probably forgot to hold WOT (wide open throttle) while testing. 70psi is way low to run at all. How to guide is here. http://geometroforum.com/topic/2574993/4/#new |

The instructions on the autozone compression test box gave the option of screwing the hose in like a spark plug or just holding it in the cylinder. I thought that to be odd since pressure could escape that way. Oh well...I will try again...sigh... |

Hey, don't be discouraged, this is how you learn. I can't tell you how many things I blew up before getting it right, but eventually you stop making mistakes and then you are an expert

Mine was 130 with no throttle...and 190 with WOT. |

Hey guys, thought I would update. After kicking myself for buying a $1000 dollar car that got near the same mileage as my Tacoma pickup, I found it out it was just the MAP sensor being disconnected . I have yet to burn a full tank since then but after driving 90 miles and parking on level ground, the fuel gauge still reads a little above 3/4 full, and this is just city driving. This is right on par with what is should be getting. I will probably re-fill her around the 350 mile mark.
