I have been driving my 92 XFI for about a year now and have loved it. Lately (probably about the last 1500 miles or so) i have been noticing that sometimes (and only when the car is warm) as i pull away from idling for more then about 30 seconds, i leave a nice plume of white smoke at the light. It only happens when the car is warm and when it idles for longer than 30 seconds. It idles very smooth (even for a 3 banger) and the gas mileage is consistant. I burn about a quart of oil every 5000 miles or so. My cat is gutted and i do not have a resonator. I have always heard when your car smokes when you start it, it is probably valve seals and when it smokes consistantly, its your rings. But mine doesn't fit either of those and i can;t even think WHERE the oil would be coming from to make that smoke... I tried opening up the air cleaner and watching to see if oil vapors where coming in from the PCV but i didn;t notice anything more then a light smoke when i revved it. |

White smoke means moisture. How's your coolant level? Might be developing a head gasket leak. |

Blue smoke means oil. Is there oil in your air cleaner? That would mean clean the PCV valve ASAP. Or it could be valve guides.

Smell the exhaust. Does it smell like coolant? |

there is a tiny bit of oil residue around the PCV outlet but none on the element and not enought to puddle or drip. throttle body throat looks clean and shiny. Exhuast stinks more like buring oil or diesel exhuast but I am not sure how to read that since i have no cat and my XFI gets terrible mileage for an XFI (i average 40, had a whole other thread on this, checked ALL the obvious MPG killers, i think my gutted cat and resonator delete give my car TOO much exhuast have killed the low end and MPG). I have a feeling it is valve guides. I have a slight tink sound from above my #1 cylinder that i think is either a dead lifter or dying cam lobe. maybe they (smoke puff and tink sound) are related? I am thinking when my classes are done (3 weeks) i will pull my Geo in the garage and rip the head apart. I can drive my MS3 while the Geo is TU. |
