Hello everyone, great site. Hope I posted this in the correct location. I am currently the proud owner of my 4th Metro. A 98 base model, 3 cylinder 5 speed. These are incredibly efficient and dependable cars. Other than routine maintenance, I have had to do very little to any of them. Never even had a starter or clutch go out When I bought my current Metro, I asked the owner if the car had any mechanical issues that he was aware of. I was told the only thing he was aware of was that the temperature guage,without warning one day went straight from the medium between H and C, straight into the red zone. The car was immediately pulled over and turned off. No indications of overheating were present. A few minutes later the car was started, the guage was positioned normally for a warmed engine and the car was driven away no worse for wear. Fast forward to this past Tuesday afteroon. I took a friend on a 120 mile roadtrip, ironically to check out a Metro for sale. No problems geting there. But on the way home on I-75, during a rainstorm, the guage started bouncing all over the place. It would almost go to the red zone and then quickly return to is normal running position between H and C. Then go to near the red zone and stay there for awhile. I turned the heat on full blast and pulled over asap. Under the hood with the engine turned off and later also running, I saw no indications that the car was overheating. No oil in water, nor water in oil. No smoke, no steam, no vapor from the exhaust, no extreme heat coming from the engine. The fan was not running either, but maybe it didnt need to be. I restarted the car and headed home. The guage did a dance for awhile, but eventually settled down to its norml location and remained there for the last 35 miles home.with no problems. I even stopped to fill the tank again before the morning price hike (I had gotten a little more than 47 mpg on the mostly highway trip). The next time I started the car , I drove about 2 miles and the guage went straight to the red zone at that point. The heat was very warm already, but probably would have been anyway. I quickly pulled over and shut her down. Again no indications, other than the temp guage, that the car was overheating. After about 10 minutes I started the car and carefully drove it home. I couldnt work on it until last night. I got in and turned the key on and without starting the car, the guage went straight to the red zone. I started the car and drove it around and the guage would go from one extreme to the other and all points in between. I noticed that when I reved the engine the guage would work like an rpm guage in reverse. The guage would go to a much cooler temperature when I hit the gas and return to near the red zone when I backed off the accelerator. In my shade tree mechanic opinion, this car does not have an overheating problem, but rather a faulty guage, faulty wiring or connection, bad ground or similar problem. However, I would love to hear the opinions of those who know much more about these great little cars than I do. Is it possible this car is overheating? Thanks everyone. |

Sender is bad or the wire going to it is grounding out. Check the wire for striped insulation, and replace the sender. |

Welcome to your new forum, KyRick! Well, if you had overheated the car as many times as you say, I don't believe it would not be running very well From Diagrams 98-01, 01 - Cooling System, Grille, Oil System, #1; ![]() Part #15 is SENSOR ENG COOL TEMP,(DUAL PURPOSE SENSOR,VOLTAGE SIG TO ECM FOR REGULATION ENG TEMPS & TEMP SENDING UNIT FOR THE INST CSTR TEMP GAGE,MOUNTED IN THERMOSTAT HOUSING),(@13650-50G01 ) I find no listing for part #21. Probably A/C. Start tracing and cleaning wires.

My apologies for not responding sooner. Temporarily lost my internet service. Thanks for the replies and warm welcome Sinequa and Bad Bent. The problem was indeed faulty wiring. I cleaned all wires (found no broken/bare wires) and connections and haven't had a problem since. Now all I have to do is find the leak on the passenger side that is puddling on the front passenger floorboard...lol. Not a biggie. We've had rain all month with more coming. Next rainstorm, I'll break out the flashlight and find the leak. |
