I recently bought Chubart's water pump. I'm going to clean it up and paint it to keep on a shelf as a spare. Any issues with leaving it to soak in my parts cleaner for a few days? Any points need special lubes? Thanks |

I'd just get it as clean as possible with dish soap and a brush in the sink, while the wife isn't looking, of course, unless she has a sense of humor about washing car parts in the sink. Make sure the old gasket is completely removed. A little piece of 80 emery cloth will slightly roughen the mating surface for gasket sealant adhesion in the future. You really don't want to soak it in anything. The bearings are resistant to coolant, but I'm not sure what else they're resistant to. Paint hides a multitude of sins. Give it a light shot of your favorite flavor of RustOleum on the outer surfaces once it dries. Put it in a large zip-lock bag for safe storage. While you're at it, get a new water pump gasket and put it in the bag, too.

Looks nice. Good idea on the zip lock. Should I put some sort of oil in there too? I'm thinking a mist of something as another corrosion inhibitor. |

Dry in the zip lock bag is all you need to do. |

Chubart...Don't be sad, be happy, it's going to a good home. You're not losing a water pump you're gaining a.....(can't think of a good ending). Thanks for the pump. Let me know via pm when that check gets there. |
