This car is a new find that I really did find in a field. Pretty good shape. No rust (hard to believe)
but this is South Carolina. We don't know what road salt is.

To the problem. I charged the battery. Put in some gas, poured some in the carb and gave it a try.

It tried to fire but after a couple of almost starts it decided not to.

I put a timing light on it to check for fire and at first it flashed once but then nothing.

Tried a couple more times and got it to flash once but again nothing after that.

Open for suggestions

i got my car out of a field, it came with some faces of death vhs videos, south central montana dirt, and a couple dead animals...oh yeah and some gardening tools...all the plastic and rubber was rotted and brittle....trying to start it, i had the same prob lems you do. so i changed all the fuel lines and did the routine tune up stuff...still no start, no fuel to the throttle body...so i pulled the fuel tank and replaced the fuel pump and the filter. there was so much varnish in the tank that i put a gallon of carb cleaner and let it sit for a week...that really cleaned the tank well...put it all back to gether again and still no start...no fuel to the throttle body, or so i thought. i tapped the top of the injector and all the sudden it rained gasoline...and it started. just to find out the valves were burnt. so rebuilt the head to find out the bottom end was shot. not entirely shot...still gets 50+ mpg on the highway. i am rebuilding a donor bottom end right now. so that is my knowledge base. oh yeah the pcv valve was as plugged as the egr. if you do all that i have done it should run...but i hope you dont have to..no matter how fun it is. :thumb lovn the icons by the way

Look inside the oil filler while somebody turns the engine over to see if the timing belt is broke. If it is still good it will turn the cam. That couild be why the timing light isn't blinking.

just FYI if the engine is not receiving a signal from the cam sensor in the distributor it will disable spark. Make sure the cam is turning, check for signal from the distributor. Look into the intake while cranking, do you see a gas spray? if not you've got a fuel problem of some sort. Have you checked compression? Compression needs to be at a very minimum to run 90psi in all 3, factory manual minimum is 150, new engine is ~200-210

Good suggestions, eh.

Might clean the contacts on the grounds and distributor, check the wires from and to the coil. The distributor, starter, alternator and intake manifold all have grounds.

Checked the cam today it is turning cleaned the rotor and contacts. Removed the pos on the battery for a while put it back on and it won't turn over now. No spark still the prob. It the battery is weak will that affect the spark. I'm going to have it checked out.

The lights etc seem to work fine. The terminals on the battery look bad, I'm going to change them out also.

Your input helps. Keep it up please.
