Well fellow metro drivers, I'm trying to find out whats wrong with my geo. Driving home on the highway, my car decided to just cut out. I was cruizing around 50mph and it just acted like it was starting to run out of gas. Just a few jerks (as if you just let off the gas and then got back on it). After it did that it drove normal. After driving about 10 more miles down the road it did it a few more times, so I decided to pull over. For the most part it ran fine when I was revving it up, except once it almost acted like it was going to die when I left off the gas. After pulling over and revving, I took it back on the highway and no problems at all????? I drove it around town a little later and no problems. No CEL so no dtcs. It just seems as if it was running out of gas those few times, but im still an 1/8 from empty. Maybe something is in my air cleaner? I usually run the car completely empty so it could be fuel filter. Hope its not the fuel pump. I took a quick look under the hood and hoses looked ok. Almost wished it would have died on me instead of just teasing. Anyone have any ideas on it. |

I have a 96 also. I have had the same experience with one exception. When I was really really really low on gas it would cut out when I was taking a corner. The gas in the tank sloshed to one side so the fuel pick up couldn't get any gas into it. Never let your tank get completly empty because the gas lubricates the fuel pump. When your fuel pump dies, it's a pain to drop your tank and big $$$ to replace the pump. |

I'm not 100% sure what it really is, but what you are describing is the EXACT same thing our 92 dodge dakota was doing for a couple months before our fuel pump decided to completely go to hell on us. We would have a full tank of gas and be cruising along and it'd just stutter. It became obvious over the couple months that it happened more often when we were going up hill, more fuel had to be pumped or perhaps the pressure is higher in the lines at that point (I'm not sure really) but that is where it actually crapped out. We were driving up a hill and the truck just died, wouldn't restart and we were stuck on a hill in the middle of traffic, and a cop pulled up 30 seconds after it died and had a tow truck there in less than 2 minutes for the lovely price of $115 to tow us literally 300 yards to the les schwab parking lot. Cop wouldn't allow us to push the vehicle or even let it roll backwards down the hill with his supervision to get it to the parking lot. Thankfully our insurance roadside assistance paid for it, but hell I was pissed about having to front the money lol. Moral of the story, be happy it teased you instead of dieing!

check the ground wires on the throttle body. to diagnose the exact cause of your problem at this point is at best a guess but that's one of the things to check, was the cause of those symptoms on mine started occasionally and finally died on the road |

And the plug/dist. wires are on securely. Check your timing and then aim the timing light into the TB to see if you can see the injector spray and when you turn the engine off it should not drip gasoline. How ole is the fuel filter? Yea, completely empty is not a good idea for the fuel pump and you might want to pull the rear seat to see how the fuel pump wires look. I gather no CEL and you might ask if what you have done to the car in the past few weeks could contribute to this problem

I agree with above, probably a fuel problem either pump or filter are likely suspects. |
