Trying to get my '92 4 door auto back on the road. Before it went down I changed brake pads, replaced timing belt and front main seal and puttered with installing an aftermarket cruise control. When I tried to drive it again, it would not make 40 mph downhill. I checked and rechecked the timing belt, it is right. Rechecked my timing, 6 btdc (and steady) per sticker w/ vacuum disconnected and plugged and pins c - d jumpered. The timing was unchanged by jumping c & d, no RPM change either. When putting it normal, the timing goes to 10 to 11 deg. Reving the engine to the most it will go, I get 20 to 22 deg. This seems a little low for total advance. Can find no vacuum leaks anywhere in the engine bay. Cold engine vacuum reads 17 and rock steady. Can hear that the throttle plate is open more than the engine can handle. Tried squirting a little gas in the intake with an atomizer, no help. Pulled main fuel line on the throttle body with key and pump off, fuel squirted quite well! I have since replaced the fuel filter just because I had one and never got around to changing it. Suspect I have a timing issue, possibly distributor or PCM related. As I have 2 sick cars in the drive way, this has fallen to second place. |

17" of vacuum at idle is low, should be 20. Time for a compression test! http://geometroforum.com/topic/2574993/1/ If that checks out then I would suggest pulling the O2 sensor and going for a spin - if power returns with the O2 sensor out then your cat is clogged and needs replaced. Good Luck!

Disconnect the exhaust from the manifold and support it with a wire. Drive. Don't get caught. See if that helps. You may have a plugged catalytic converter. Also, while your in the area, check the engine compression. And, after you do that, how about a new set of spark plugs? |

It sounds to me like you are jumpering the tps wires if you are jumping c and d. You need to look at the diagram on the hood and jumper the plugin in the driver's side corner behind the shock tower. Also if it is a 92 there is no vaccume to disconect to time it. Ken..... Edited by 91 ragtop, Apr 19 2011, 08:08 AM.
