Grinding sound while accelerating

So after figuring out my MPG problem (disconnected MAP sensor) I have noticed that my Geo makes a grinding sound while accelerating. It does it in all gears (by the time I am in 4th gear road noise drowns it out so I am not positive it does it in 4th and 5th) but not at all RPM's. If I wind the motor out a bit it seams to go away. My brakes and rotors are shot, I just haven't had the time to dig in to those (this weekend for sure) and am thinking it might be my calipers? I'd think it would do it all speeds if that were the case. Any ideas, gear heads out there?

Drain and change the transmission fluid. Install Synchromesh. It comes in 2 flavors. Penzoil and Amsoil. 2 1/2 quarts. Cross your fingers.

If you haven't changed the transmission oil, that's a great idea :thumb
If you want to see if that makes a difference....and,
If you have a half hour.... lotta ifs there :-/
put it up on blocks or jack stands in front (safety first)
Have someone start it up and go through the gears.
What do you hear?
When it's hot, change the transmission oil.
Try going through the gears again.
What do you hear (or not hear)?
Inquiring minds want to know ^o)

2.5 quarts of transmission oil (Pennzoil Synchromesh ~ $7/quart)

Changed the tranny fluid today. It is still making the sound. After listening to the sound again, I realized perhaps "grinding" was a bad verb to describe the sound. It only happens when I wind the engine past normal shift points at high rpm. then it will stop doing it at an even higher rpm (I am not redlining it, but this happens when I have to give it some juice in traffic to maintain traffic flow). The sound itself it hard describe, but it kind of harsh and sounds like metal vibrating...kinda lol. It does it in every gear. Wondering if it could be exhaust related. Very perplexing.

Inspect your cv axles. They usually grind in a turn. Worth looking at anyway.

This does it while accelerating in a straight line. When I had the car on jack stands I gave the tires a solid wiggle and they are rock solid. No popping or grinding when turning. :hmm

It is still doing it. It is not that loud but just doesn't seem right. I guess I will just make sure all the fluid levels are good and see if it gets worse lol.

Yeah if it isn't your brakes (which I somewhat doubt unless the caliper is riding wrong and constantly pushing them into the rotor/drums) you may have clutch issues or a bearing in the clutch.

Since your tires are rock solid it's not a wheel bearing at least :) :thumb

There are plenty of bearings in the transmission though that could be bad :(

So many ifs, but try putting it back up on jackstands in the front, put it into each gear and see if you can determine where the noise is coming from, from outside. May make it a bit easier to pin point the noise. If you have a mechanic's Stethescope ($8), toss it onto your tranny case when it is on stands and in gear (Wheels should just turn at idle), this should give you a clear indication of if it is coming from the tranny at least. If you can't afford the $8, use a long handled screwdriver and put it to your ear, but it's not as exact :P

Yep, I just changed the brakes and rotors (which was causing the clunking sound under my car) and its still doing it. I changed the tranny fluid also. I wonder if it could be exhaust related. Maybe thats wishful thinking! Changing out the transmission does not sound fun!

I wonder if it could be bad motor mounts? I am not hearing this grinding at idle. Only certain RPMs and after I wind the motor out a bit it stops.

There isn't really much on the exhaust to cause a grinding noise :) Unless your exhaust is laying on the ground, then it's sort of obvious :thumb

Bad motor mounts as well, are they shaky? These engines do idle rough as it is, but is your engine shaking at higher rpms? If not this is most likely not your problem...

Changing the transmission isn't so hard :) You may be able to pick one up for like $50-$60 at a junk yard, open it up and rebuild it, then install that one and never have this problem again ^^ In that case though you'd be replacing your clutch system in case that was the problem, or to avoid future problems (since you're already in there :) ) Total cost if your gears are good on a junkyard tranny, rebuild kit, new clutch kit and 3 quarts of synchromesh would run you ohhhh, $315 (high ballin it)? There may be something I missed in there, but I think those are your major components. There are a LOT of very experienced people in transmissions here on the site, and the newly experienced RobotsAteMyArms did it, so no chickening out now :D (This is in no way a slander towards women, RAMA's comic and her own words say she is not very strong!) :) /hugs RAMA

Supposedly the clutch is new on this vehicle (according to seller). Of course you have to take what sellers say with a grain of salt. The noise isn't very bad. It shifts fine, and I never have trouble getting it into gear. It doesn't make the noise in neutral either which is odd. I will let this thread know if it gets worse!
