So my sister has a 94 Metro 4dr, 1.0L. She recently drove it with no oil and now it's running really rough. No oil was on the dipstick. When I did put oil in it I put about 2-3 quarts in. No smoke, no leaks. Fluids are good. Oil looks good, no foam no creamy look. As well as antifreeze looks good. I took it for a test frive and hit the freeway. Got up to highway speeds but took way longer than normal. Again afterwards no leaks no smoke while driving. Now heres where it gets interesting. I pulled the plugs and heres what I had.

How in the hell was the car running with these in it and what should be the first step I take in solving this?

You need a rebuild.

Can't run a car that only holds 3.5 quarts on 0.5 to 1.5 quarts and expect it to work.

Perform or have performed a engine compression test. Welcome to the forum. Yes you do have a oil problem. Cleaning or replacing bad plugs might get it back to not missing and driveable. Find and repair any oil leaks and keep plenty of oil in the engine. If compression test results suck then rebuild the engine anyway. Read the tip of the day thread, :lol

Top and bottom? I'm no automotive genius but I DIY and am a stickler for detail. How long of a job are we talking?

Easiest engine rebuild you could ever do. How long depends on you and what you do.

Welcome to the Greatest Place on Earth! :thumb

Doc pretty much nailed it. ^o)

Realistically I'd figure on a month. B-)

From ordering parts, :news scheduling machine shop time, :fon taking care of the "might as wells" :hmm , cleaning, painting, assembling, installing :gamerz , to driving. :drivin

Some have done it in a weekend, as long as all parts are on hand. Nothing fancy. Nothing pretty. Just getting it done. :rocker

For me, that would be a stretch. :coffee

Take a peak at the "How To's" section to see what we're in for. :cheers

Any block and head 89-2000 will work, you may have to change over the intake, distributor, oil pan/pump and the timing belt/gears/idler if the engine is not the same generation (mid year '92-'95)

What makes you say that Woodie? Wouldn't I have some serious knocking or engine noise?

Not necessarily, a lot of these engines have been disassembled for a head job to find a broken piston skirt. You may not even know its broken.
