So due to time contraints nothing doing yet but I was wondering how much of a crap shoot would it be to pull an engine at a junker and drop it in expecting to have it ready to run?

usually junkyard engines are as bad as the one in your car already :( expect burned exhaust valves and/or worn rings. these are 12-22 year old engines after all.

Unless you can carry a battery, compression tester and a remote starter button into the wrecking yard it will simply be a roll of the dice.

Grr

Look for a Metro that either failed due to "rust" or had an "accident" IE in theory that car was RUNNING when it was junked.

if the car looks really nice then you should be worried because "WHY" was it junked?

a nice rear ending should in theory have the highest probability of giving you a Plug and play engine if its not been sitting too long.

Just my two cents:

I had the same problem with my metro and found a guy through ebay that was selling his 93 1.0L. Complete engine for 150. I drove to his place and talked to him for a bit and he was a metro man himself! Had owned several over the years and this one had come from a car that rusted out prematurely.

Give google, ebay, and craigslist a once over and you may stumble onto a similar engine. Then tell these guys what you have and they will fill you in on all the "might as wells" as Snowfish said :thumb
