Won't start; Sitting a while and won't start

It's my wife's 1997 metro LSI 2 door hatchback, 4 cylinder. It has been sitting around for about 2 years and always started right up. I told her to run it about every 3 months to keep the oil, and battery up. She hasn't started it since last fall and told me the battery was dead. I went to look at it and the battery is fine.

It cranks and sounds like it wants to start but just won't. I was messing with it today and got it to start if I held the gas pedal down almost all the way, but it didn't sound good. There is a possibility that something got in and ate some of the wires but I haven't seen and chewed up.

Sounds to me like lack of fuel, so I looked for the fuel pump but didn't see anything. I'm assuming it's on the gas tank?

Any ideas or suggestions are happily accepted. I don't know very much about the Metro since I have never had to work on it. Thanks in advance.

its INSIDE the gas tank, not fun :( pour some marvel mystery oil into the cylinders through the spark plug holes, its good for un-gumming rings that have been sitting for a long time. And get rid of the gas in the tank, its probably the cause of the no-start condition, it'll partially fall out of solution as a varnish like substance when it sits for that long, and can clog lines/pumps/filters.

Welcome to your new forum, NormanMc! :coffee

True, these are fuel injected engines but when my van has sat all winter the first thing I do is pour a little fuel into the Carb or in our case the Throttle Body. Starter fluid might be good. :hmm

BUT I use STA-BIL Fuel Stabilizer in my van, snow blower and lawn mower during the off season, before storage or long periods of non-use. Seems to work. :whistle

Gas pedal to the floor opens the butterfly valve to allow more air in. It may have flooded. Besides mcmancuso's suggestion, I'd simply replace the plugs, unless they look clean, but I doubt it.

The 2-3 tsp of Marvel Mystery Oil can be pumped out of the cylinders before starting with the plugs out, coil disconnected and rags covering the plug holes, if I recall correctly. :-/
