Late this afternoon I was fooling around outside and dug around in my metal scrap pile and come up with enough material to start on my cargo rack. Been intending on doing it for quite some time. What do you think Billy? I just cut a few pieces for starters. Long way to go but atleast I got started! I want to show off a couple of things that I really have enjoyed and glad I bought years ago. If anyone does not know what they want to ask their wife to get them for Christmas next year here it is. Ask for a metal chop saw! I have used mine for so many things and since using a cutting torch has got so expensive, it saves money too on cutting metal. One other thing, I do not care much for harbor freight tools myself (even though I shop there), one thing that I do buy there are metal cutting blades you can put in a skilsaw. These again come in real handy! It made short work of this expanded metal here. I have a gas powered metal cutting saw like the firemen use to cut into cars but I only mostly use it when I buy metal to cut it down from 20' sections to sizeable pieces I can haul in a trailer. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well I finished it up today. Been having to put it on hold since I started it the other day with all these storms going on. Thanks to you Billy I got started and got it done. Its been a project on the back burner but I decided to go ahead and do it after seeing yours, especially since I found the steel in the scrap pile. Had to buy one .98 can of spray paint for the project and that was it. Now I just got to get started on the hitch for the geo, so I can use it on it also. ![]()

Notice my friend this is posted in the lounge. I do plan on putting a hitch on the Geo soon and then this device will be used on it probably more than the wifes ride! |

Well yesterday was the first day I got a chance to try out my hitch rack. I like it. Now if I ever get a chance to go deep sea fishing, I have something to mount my cooler on to bring home them sea whoppers with!

be careful using such a device on the GEO. I have wanted to make one but have not figured out a SAFE way to do it yet. IE your hitch is only as strong as whatever chunks of your metro its attached too. these cargo carriers place a TREMENDOUS amount of stress on the hitch mounting points. when your talking your SUV that can handle 7000 pounds or more this is nothing. when your talking your metro thats not "intended" to handle 100 pounds its a whole nother story. as that carrier "bounces" your going to be apply momentary forces well in excess of THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS of pounds to your mounting points. IE think about heavily reinforcing those mounting points. I don't know if I would trust my mounting points to such forces. Edited by nerys, Aug 7 2011, 12:09 PM.

Still not built the geo hitch yet but you make a good point Nerys. As for the jeep, its all frame mounted and a rock solid hitch. One day I hope to get around to the metro hitch, then I will see what I can come up with as for strength. |

I run a strap from the top of my trunk to the far edge of the carrier. That takes out all the bounce and places the load very close to the edge of the hitch. So far so good.

I was thinking of that too but don't like how it looks and am afraid of damaging the car (paint hatch etc..) or pulling the hatch mounts with too much stress. Good idea for the vert though. No problems harming your trunk where the strap touches? |
