metal shavings when I drained the clutch fluid

There is a grinding/scraping sound when I let off the clutch. I was thinking it was the release bearing,
but now I am not sure. I drained the tranny fluid and there were metal shavings in it.

Let me explain: Two years ago my husband was driving "my little red car"
He said he was driving and all of a sudden heard a noise and then the car skidded to a stop.
We towed it home and it say for a couple of years. I started it up a couple of days ago and
it goes in to all gears and drives but it is that grinding noise when I let out of the clutch and it also
grinds in neutral.

So what do you all think?

Sounds like a release bearing to me too!

A bit of brass (shiny glittery fluid) and a few small flakes of metal on the plug are normal the first time you change trans fluid unless you double clutch a lot.

Commonly springs can fall out of the clutch disc and jam in the pressure plate, it could have been something like this causing the initial symptom.

If there was some small brass and grey matter in the trans fluid, then that is normal, but if the fluid looked "metallic" and had larger pieces in it, then the noise you hear is an idler shaft bearing inside the trans and a rebuild or replacement will be needed and might as well replace the clutch when the trans is out.

After resolving the grinding issue and draining all the tranny fluid, you should use GM Pennzoil Synchromesh fluid. It will shift smoother and perform better in colder months. Good luck.

Thanks you guys! I believe what initially happened was what mcmancuso said about springs can fall out of the clutch disc and jam in the pressure plate. Now I am trying to figure out what springs?
