Bought a 95 3cy 5speed geo metro with 56000 actual miles about a year ago. It was sitting in someones back yard. I willingly paid 700. The tires had a date code on them from 97...rotton. The gas dried up in the tank and locked up the fuel pump. I managed to clean it all up and unlock the fuel pump and its been working perty good. I luvs my new car. Wish I was young again sos' I could fix it up proper. All the rubber is falling apart. as I expected. Couple of days ago I changed out the timing belt using Bad Bents excellent guide (thanks) which brings me to my question. The timing is set to 8 degrees with the thingie shorted out but my distributor is rotated all the way to the right. Like standing on the drivers side and grabbing the dist cap and twisting it... like closing a wine bottle. This is where the dist was set before the timing belt change. I thought the adjustment would have moved more to the center of the little adjustment slot. It seems to be running good. Shakes alot at idle but someone so graciously put a video on this site showing how mush metros shake and I don't think mine is much worse, maybe a little. Makes me think the belt is one tooth off but this aint my first timing belt, I had a straight edge out there checking it but you never know. If I don't come up with anything im a few days I'm going to open her back up in a few days and just thinking about it makes my back hurt. So anyhow... I'm only online a couple of times a day. geeeerrrraaattteee site. |

Your timing belt is off by a tooth. 8° should be near center of travel.

My pleasure, tomrayj. Most of us have gotten the belt off one tooth or more. I did, and I went back and aligned the crank gear with the mark on the block then look at the position of the distributor rotor. In your case I suspect the rotor is going to be aimed at the brake booster. Well, maybe not that far, but in that direction judging from the thread title. In which case the cam gear would be rotated clock wise a tooth to get the rotor more vertical. Maybe one tooth at a time? Mark the belt and gear with a piece of chalk because, in my case, the valve springs pulled the cam a little when I removed the belt. Silicon spray. I use it on my car's rubber parts. Rubber Treatment: Due to the moisturizing property of silicone spray, it can help prevent rubber from cracking. If applied to rubber gaskets or other rubber items that may become dried, the rubber will be sealed. A sealed rubber gasket won't leak moisture and become dried out. Silicon Spray for Dive Gear, for example. |
