My 92 died (1.0L, carbed, AC, auto) and judging by the way it did, I think the camshaft pulley stripped off the shaft. I think this has a stamped steel pulley rather than a cast one. What's the best solution? Can this pulley to shaft connection be repaired? Is there an upgrade to a newer version (cast)? What is compatible ? As the car came to a stop the engine made many turns while the camshaft was doing something else. What's the likelyhood I have valve or piston damage ? Your help is appreciated! That is an unlikely scenario. It is far more likely your square tooth cam belt failed. Your car is most likely fuel injected with one throttle body injector. There is a very good tutorial on replacing your timing belt here: http://geometroforum.com/topic/2232748/. If you want to upgrade to a half round tooth timing belt you will need both top and bottom timing pulleys and a 5 bolt fan belt pulley from a late 93 through 95 1.0. |

It really is a naturally aspirated carburator. It was rebuilt 25k ago and the idiot at the machine shop did something to the pulley/shaft. The camshaft lost sync upon first start. I returned the engine to the shop and they 'fixed it'. I haven't seen this up close but I suspect there isn't a key but more like a 'bump and hole' between shaft and pulley Given all that what do you think ? is there a camshaft/pulley upgrade ? Which years in light of this ? |

On second thought, you may be right about the FI. My old school head perceives FI as a manifold injection but you indicated a throttle body injection. The carb looks conventional and I haven't looked down in it to see the old 'squirt' of fuel which I think would peg it as naturally aspirated. |

There is a pin sticking out of the end of the cam and a hole in the gear. If the cam is not screwed up just replace the gear and get the bolt tight. There is a through hole in the cam under the valve cover to hold the cam. Lots of cars used stamped steel gears with no problems. |

broken belt is much more likely. If it was the pulley it may have ruined the locator pin on the end of the cam as well and you'll need a new cam any '89-'00 cam will do. '93-'95 metros use a round tooth belt with a cast pulley:![]() past '95 they switched to a wider belt, it would also work, which ever one you get, make sure you get the crank pulley too and the right timing belt, and a new tensioner pulley. These are indeed non-interference engines and there's no valve/piston damage from it running out-of-time. |

Got 70 MPG?

Only one way to find out for sure..... And it's not a carb. Your year Metro has a Throttle Body Injector, as do the vast majority of Metros. |

Oh, that's right, was it just the sprints that were carb'd? |

The JDM replacement engines are coming in with carbs, so there are some floating around. |

JDM engines don't come out of Metros, they come from J. |
