Greetings Team Geo, Diving into what I thought would be a camshaft issue has turned ugly. Removing spark plugs to turn the crank I found two plugs had the tips smashed (1 & 3). Upon removing the air cleaner etc, one of the bolts that holds the air cleaner bracket to the throttle body was missing. Digging deeper I found the bolt inside the intake manifold. I have only found a small piece of a washer. Pictures of the head and cylinder are below. There is some scaring, mostly on the head, some at the top of the pistons (circled). There's no scaring on the cylinder walls. I've yet to take the heads apart but there doesn't seem to be any scaring around the valve seats. My best guess is that the washer broke/split, half into #1, half into #3. I can't think of any other way two cylinders would take a hit if the bolt didn't make it past the valve (not likely it would have made it back out for sure). Your thoughts are appreciated. My second concern is the timing belt cover, it's knarly at the bottom. What are my equivalents for a replacement? Any sources that you know of ? I've exhausted the local yards. ![]()

First, the easy part. Click on "My Topics" right below this post. It will link you to a list of my topics, of course. I posted a product review on new timing covers. Secondly. OUCH! Well, it's not as bad as it seems. At least the cylinder bores are "good" You can minimally replace 2 pistons and the head. The salvage yard is a good source, or let me know, and I'll see if I can harvest something for you. One of the members recently found a freshly overhauled head in the salvage yard. I have 2 pistons, as removed from my 1990. Or, do a complete overhaul. If the engine does not need an overhaul, a repair probably the going to be the most economical and expedient. Send m a PM so I don't forget. |
