P1250; What does this mean (in language I can understand)

Hi, I have a 1996 Geo Metro and it has a code P1250. I found this out from AutoZone but they could not tell me how to fix it. Here is what their diagnostic printout says: "Definition: EFE heater circuit fault. Explanation: The ECM as detected an open or short circuit condition on the EFE Heater circuit. Possible Cause: 1) Failed EFE Heater grid; 2) Open or short circuit condition; 3) Poor electrical connection."

I am not sure what my next steps should be. I do not have the money to take it to the dealership to be fixed, but do have someone who will fix it for me, once I find out what needs fixing.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

The EFE heater is normally located between the throttle body and intake manifold. Its primary function is to pre-heat the fuel/air charge when the engine is cold. My cars are older and do not have this, so I am not sure what the procedure is to check the component, but there should be a way to test it with a DVOM (digital voltage ohm meter). If you purchase a good manual for your year of car, like a haynes or chiltons, they will show you the exact location of the grid and tell you how to test it. Sorry I can not help more. Good luck. :thumb

EFE heater operates only when the coolant temperature is below 170° and rpm is above idle. Your problem could be the EFE relay, the EFE heater, or the wiring in between. The troubleshooting section for this error code is four pages long, I doubt very much that a Chilton's or Haynes is going to be any help at all, you need a Factory Service Manual. Resistance of the heater itself is .5 to 3.0Ω at 68°, but that is only one of about thirty different tests. I've also heard of the heater being shorted to the intake manifold because of a bad gasket.
