I don't really know much about oil weights etc.. I have asked a few mechanics in the past but it always turns into a huge debate and all I ever hear is follow the recommended weight and call it good. I have always used 5-w30 and it runs fine. I never use pennzoil though, Castrol is what I trust.

It's probably okay, but I'm not going to be the Guinea Pig, you go first.

I wouldn't worry about it, just put in the proper weight next change.

I run 5W20 in both of my rides and in all the rebuilds I do for customers/members.

Isnt that a thinner oil? I was always told to use a thicker oil like 10w-30 or 10w-40 for older or high mileage engines.

Got 70 MPG?

I use 5W-30 in my Geo. I've got 210K miles on the clock. I have 60psi on cold startups and 22psi at hot idle (oil is usually around 200 degrees or a little above after a 28 mile highway drive).

I've seen several Metro engines that "died" much sooner than they should have because their owners used a heavier-than-recommended oil. The tolerances on these engines, if not too worn, requires the thinner oil to keep everything properly lubricated, especially in winter/cold weather. I personally use 3 qt. of 5w-30 oil and 1/2 qt. MMO (Marvel Mystery Oil) at each oil change. The MMO really helps to reduce wear. Plus I use MMO in my gas tank at each fill-up, which helps lubricate the top end better than plain oil. I got my '93 XFI with 352,000 miles on it and started using MMO/oil in the ratio mentioned above, as well as in the gas. Now have 387,000 miles on it and it uses less oil now than when I bought it.

Did you get an oil analysis done with this mixture to prove this, or are you just going off of what you think it's doing? I'd like to see the analysis sheet for the amount of wear metals in it out of curiosity.

Grr

5w20 and 5w30 are not thinner.

they are both "thinnest" 5w oil. SO no difference between the oils in the winter.

in the summer it will be difference. the max weight of one is 20 and the other is 30

I IMAGINE where most of us live 20 is "just fine" if not healthy for the engines.

in EXTREME conditions EXTREME heat you might be better off with 5w30

My next 2 oil changes will be Quaker State 5-20, "advanced durability" I wonder how good this oil really is or is it their standard oil re-badged for increased sales?
