Hi, I am new to the forum, I just bought my first geo metro, its a 1991 Lsi 5 speed. I just replaced the engine and I have a few questions. There is a tube hanging inside the engine compartment behind the alternator, does anyone know what this is? I have a link to a picture of it. Also my car is idleing at about 1500 Rpm and I don't know why. How many vacume tubes are supposed to be attached to the bvsv? there is just one small one and it looks like there is supposed to be one attached to the back but there isnt. Help please! thanks!

That looks like the drain for the A/C evaporator in the heater box in the car, does it go to the firewall? Look at the hose diagram on the under-side of your hood for the vacuum hose routing

Yep, that's the drain for the AC system. |

Welcome to your new forum, Alobster111! Your hood should be like my '91and has a sticker like this on it: ![]() I see only one hose. However since you replaced the engine you may have something different? It would be a good idea to replace all the vacuum hoses since this is a new-to-you Geo. If it is not a vacuum leak then it could be the PCV valve stuck open, a gasket leak, the throttle cable is too tight, the factory set throttle stop screw was messed with or the idle screw is not set correctly. Click for setting idle screw: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=369119&t=2625456 If this does not solve it then please post another thread or bump this one.

Thanks, i'll check for vacuum leaks too. I just put a new gasket on the intake manifold so i doubt it is that. If it helps, it fluctuates up and down each second or so from 1500 to 2000

I also replaced the timing belt, could it be idleing high if I got it a notch off? Could an exhaust leak cause a high idle?

Pinging or low rpm performance are the two characteristics of the cam timing being off a tooth. An exhaust leak might be loud but does not affect idle unless up stream of the O2 sensor, but I doubt it. That may just lean the O2 reading and the car might run rich. You can spray the gaskets with Carb. spray cleaner and the rpm should change if there is a vacuum leak. Yeah, the extra air changes the air/fuel mix and the ECM compensates then normalizes in an up/down cycle. This is at idle so you can also check your Idle Adjust Screw with this post: http://geometroforum.com/single/?p=369119&t=2625456 You can check your ignition timing and TPS settings also. |

Ok thanks for the help. While checking for vacuum leaks i unplugged the "silencer" and plugged the end and my idle speed dropped to 1000 rpm. |
