I finally got my 92 Geo Metro running. I have been driving it for a few months now. Recently I have noticed a problem that is getting worse. The check engine light keeps coming on and off. If it stays on , the car runs smooth but has less power. When it goes off it runs fine. Most of the time now as i start off the check engine light will come on and go off. Everytime it does this the engine runs really jerky (for lack of better words). It cuts in and out and really jerks you around. Once I reach 4th gear it smooths out and runs good (the check engine light goes off). When I slow down it starts back up. The code is 24. Everything I have read about the VSS Circuit has mentioned the speedometer not working. Mine works fine whether the light is on or off. What is the problem?

the speedometer and the VSS are mostly separate systems. The speedo is run by a spinning cable from the transmission to the gauge cluster. On the back of the gauge cluster there's a reed switch that is tripped by a magnet on a spinning disc which is turned by the speedo cable. If the magnet, reed switch, or wiring between that and the ECU are not working right you'll get the error and STILL have a working speedo in the dash.

My VSS died on my 93 and I never had the first light or code pop up. My auto door locks quit working(woot!) and my MPGuino read "000". Car ran fine though.
