Hi! I'm Scott and I am looking into purchasing a Geo Metro. Presently, I am looking at a 1994 3 cylinder 5 speed with four doors. If anyone has any advise or wants to come with me to have a look at the car, please write me a PM or reply here! |

Just make sure it doesn't have a lot of rust on the areas where the axle passes through the frame. That is called the horn frame. If it is rusted then the car will be unsafe to drive. Aside from that, everything else that is wrong with the car is easy to fix. Rust is about the only thing that will kill a metro. If you have your eye on a particular automobile then let us know. We will guide you through the process of how to tell a good metro from a crusher. Glad your here. |

Thanks for the advice! And how high mileage is too high? I talked to the guy on the phone. He said it has 180k miles. He did say that it is free of rust and that it has no dents. |

Personally, I would not be afraid to buy a metro with 200K on it. It's just getting broke in. The biggest problem you will find with metro that has that many miles on it will be the valves. You might as well get used to the little things that make these cars so alluring to us. At about 135k the valves and rings go south. Nothing you can do about it. It's what it is. Start thinking how you will tackle that issue before you purchase the car, and after you buy it then you won't be surprised when you have to tear into the head. The valves go bad because of a weird engineering thing that suzuki couldn't have known about when they made the car. It has a week valve system due to the intake and exhaust systems. Don't be alarmed by it. It is what it is. Most folks on this site will tell you to take a compression tester to see what the numbers are. For me, I could care less. I know I will have to break into the engine and fix it, so I don't care what the numbers are. I look at other things. Will this car sell quickly after I put a few bucks in it? Which means, is the car straight, non rusting, has no major problems with the interior, and will it try to start. I really don't like towing a car I newly purchased, but if I have to push it home, that's fine, as long as the rest of the car is relatively OK. If you have time to post pics of the car you are looking at, we will give our best guess if it is a keeper or not. Is the price reasonable? That's between you and the seller. If you both walk away from the exchange with good feelings then it was a good sell. If you pay a LOT of money for the metro and it doesn't run, or has other issues you might have sore feelings if you aren't versed in what you are getting yourself into. Walk around the car, kick the tires, notice if major things are missing:i.e. no seats, no radio, no exhaust system, tires mismatched, paint not matching, lights cracked, headliner torn, lights not working, etc,etc,etc.... Just things to think about. If I could get a metro WITH all of those problems for $300 I would jump on it. If I could get a pristine metro with 185K on the clock, I would be tempted to pay upwards of $1500. No lie. I've been there and bought both types of metros with and without those problems. I have never been unhappy with a metro purchase because any problem I come across, I fix it. Good luck with you search. Edited by dayle1960, May 24 2011, 09:38 PM.

Geo's are economical to drive, relatively inexpensive to work on compared to newer cars. That said, you need to decide what your personal threshold for re-work is. Best of luck on your expedition. |

Yes, welcome to your new forum, kondspi! Now you know what to look for and if it's under $1000 and no rust then jump on it. Best of luck.

Thanks exactly what you see now. Metros can be gone within hours if they're nice and priced right. Seems the word is getting out & they are becoming more popular every day. Good luck with your search. |
