I've not found this to be covered, so I thought this might help somebody prolong the life of the rear window on their convertible. When I get lucky and get a "new to me" vert, I always end up having to install a new top just 'cause the back window usually is cracked or overly scratched, but the rest of the top is okay...polishing compound can sometimes restore it, but fixing cracks, well, sucks... So one of the little things I do to prevent cracks and scratches is make a rear window cover, so your going to need a nice fluffy kind of bath towel and a low heat glue gun... ![]() if you ever noticed when you open your trunk on your convertible you'll see these Velcro strips... ![]() these were a factory protection cover hold downs... ![]() personally, in all my years of buying and selling verts I've yet to find an original...so with a good towel, I've made my own... first you place the towel down, but, only to the inner body line, if you go below this line the towel will get caught in your weather stripping... ![]() use the low heat glue gun (I use this for a lot of interior repairs)... ![]() glue the towel to the mating Velcro strips... ![]() I also like to glue a few magnets to the inside of the top, and on the towel near the top for those windy days... ![]() and that's it... ![]() now when you drop the top, you will not scratch or pinch the clear plastic window, during spring, it protects it from tree sap and pollen...and when it gets dirty, just wash it... |

This is some good information Ernest, thanks for writing it up. But I think it is only curing the outside half of the problem. the inside of the plastic is dropping/drooping straight down into the naughahyde hanger, which is in all likliehood, covered with dust just waiting to scratch that clear plastic. Or am I missing something? |

I don't think in the many years I have owned Verts. I ever had the inside of the plastic window get messed up...usually what damages the plastic window is not washing it correctly, and when it folds into the trunk space, it rubs on itself, that is why the original top came with the Velcro strips, so one could cover window when lowering...I had one of these covers. It was a extra cost to the owner/buyer, It wore out after time so now I use heavy bath towels and still have not had a rear window go bad or crack... |
