Hey there everyone! My name is Dicky Brucks and I've come to this forum because I recently bought a 95 Geo Metro Lsi Hatchback 1.3L Auto for $1450 (in cash). I loved the thing instantly and was excited to finally be able to park in San Francisco (they're so small!) and save a ton of gas on my commute. It's now 3 days since the date of purchase, and it's fairly obvious this things transmission is toast. When I test drove it, it shifted fine - but yesterday it was maxing out RPM and wouldn't shift unless I pumped the gas, and this morning it made a screech/squeal that sounded like a loose belt and absolutely refused to shift, only going about 25 mph at full rev all the way to the train station (I decided to take the train today haha). Needless to say, I'm really frustrated - and hoping this forum will help me get this thing running again. I'm kind of tempted to just junk it and cut my losses, but it still infuriates me to lose 1500 bucks like this. Thanks! |

Have you checked the fluid level? Welcome to the forum. |

Auto transmission is pretty easy to get, they're not in high demand, junkyard ought to sell you one for ~$100-300 depending on the yard. If you're mechanically inclined you can put it in yourself. maybe there's a forum member close to you that could offer some assistance? If you do end up getting a trans you MUST get one from the 4 cylinder metro, the 3 cylinder trans is wider and will not fit into the engine bay correctly. Edited by mcmancuso, May 31 2011, 09:54 AM.

Haven't had time yet. I work 40 hours with a 2 hour daily commute lol. I will when I get the chance. The dude I bought it from said he got the transmission serviced, and when I asked he said he got the fluid changed. I'm guessing he probably found out about the transmission and decided to do a temporary fix-it so he could sell it. Also, are the brakes supposed to feel "squishy" ? (Takes significant effort to apply stopping power) I get the feeling the guy lied about the brakes getting serviced too. Im thinking he probably got the pads done but not rotors or calipers. |

Should have asked, do you have a check engine light on? |

Nope the check engine light isn't on - in fact, none of the lights are on. I live in the SF Bay area so there's plenty of Pick n pulls around - one in Newark has 10 or so Metros waiting for my toolbox. How much of a pain is it to get the tranny out of a junked car? I'm mechanically inclined though I know very little about cars. (My expertise is in other areas) Is there a good how-to on this site anyone can link me to? |

First check your fluid level and if it is ok, have someone who knows how scan your transmission control module for tranny codes. Your transmission may be very easily repairable. |

as far as removing/replacing the trans, in the 4 cyl you'll probably have to take the engine/trans out together and separate them. Not particularly difficult, 3 motor mounts, 2 on the trans, one on the engine, the CV's (I usually just disconnect the driver's side knuckle from the car and pull the CV from that side of the trans, then pull the other as the engine comes out of the car) then just the various wires/hoses. Its a lot easier/quicker if you have someone with metro experience there to give a hand, but can be done by yourself, just label everything well. |

Just wanted to say hello and let you know, I just recently replaced my manual trans (I know, the work involved is a bit different) and I too know very little about cars. Runs great though. The guys on this forum can talk you through anything (My working vehicle is proof). Junk yards are the way to go. Good luck with getting her fixed up! |

Welcome to your new forum, DickyBrucks! I only have a few links on automatic transmissions: Automatic Transmission Differences Automatic Fluid/Maintenance It may help if you get the green shop manual for a 1995 Geo Metro. There are several starting at $36 on eBay, click on: eBay search: 95 Geo Metro Manual Shop Hang in there. I had to buy a new engine for mine. For the price it's not bad since you like the parking advantages. Next best thing to handicapped plates, eh.
